Nintendo hints at GBA brand being phased out

GBAsSince 2004, the lion's share of attention has gone to Nintendo's DS while the venerable Game Boy Advance has slowly faded into the sunset.

In remarks made to GameDaily.biz, a couple of hints were dropped by George Harrison, Nintendo of America's Vice President in charge of Marketing and Communications, as to the future and destiny of the fun little Game Boy Advance handhelds.

The phenomenal success of the DS, with over 40 million units sold since its launch, has made it one of the "pillars" of Nintendo's amazing comeback story. Because of this, the GBA doesn't seem to be as dominant a player for Mario and Friends as it once was.

Harrison said, "This year in our marketing you really won't see much push [for the] Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It's hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark."

With huge success of the DS, it remains unclear just how long Nintendo will continue to support the Game Boy brand. But with over 79 million units sold worldwide, the GBA still may have some good years left in it if Game Boy Advance fans have anything to say about it.

I can't believe we're almost at a time when you can't buy anything with "Game Boy" written on it :(

The first hints, for me anyway, that the GBA was doomed was last year at Toy's R Us. They were liquidating their whole section of GBA titles. I made off like a bandit with $5 priced games that used to cost $40, but I was sad too because it probably meant the end of the GBA.

Oh, I'm sure it's not the end of the Game Boy brand, but just an end to the Advance branch of this handheld saga. And if not, well, it's been a good run.
