Update: Max Payne 3 release pushed back

Max Payne isn't happy about the push back either.

Rockstar Games will have fans waiting a couple more months for their long-awaited return to the Max Payne series with Max Payne 3. The third-person shooter will now be hitting the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 first on May 15 in North America, May 18 internationally, and then hitting PC a few weeks later on May 29 in North America, June 1 internationally.

Max Payne 3 brings powerful storytelling back to the action-shooter genre,” said Rockstar Games Founder Sam Houser. “Rockstar Studios are delivering a game that’s both incredibly cinematic and very, very intense to play.”

This latest installment in the franchise takes place years after Max Payne 2 and sees Max making the move from New York City to São Paulo, Brazil to work in private security and escape his past. Unfortunately for Max, his wealthy client’s wife is kidnapped and the incident leads to a string of events that plunges the former detective into the same type of violent chaos he thought he had left behind in the US.

Max Payne 3 will also be the first in the series to feature multiplayer, which is attempting to take narrative in the mode to a new level thanks to contextual objectives and rounds that differ based on the outcome of its predecessors. The game was originally set to release sometime in March.

UPDATE: In conjunction with the delay of its release, Rockstar has revealed that it will extend its pre-order period for the special edition of Max Payne 3 until April 2. The special edition includes a 10″ collectible Max Payne statue, bullet keychain, original still life art prints, the “Classic Multiplayer Character Pack,” “Disorderly Conduct Multiplayer Weapons Pack,” and official soundtrack.
