The analysts are at it again with predictions about what will happen within the game industry. The latest word out on "The Street" is that Sony,s PSP is headed for yet another price reduction. The handheld unit first hit the store shelves at a hefty $250 price tag and has since been discounted to $199. However, if the business prognosticators are right, the PSP will go for a nice price of only $149.
P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research said, "There is a price cut coming in the second half of the year [because the PSP] has lost momentum. Nintendo has had a great run since it launched the DS Lite and Sony needs to regain some ground."
Chris Morris, of CNNMoney, believes that while the PSP has sold approximately as many handheld units as Nintendo,s DS, (20 million and 21 million respectively), the PSP is lagging as far as hit game titles. He said, "...the PSP has not had a game truly capture the gaming world's attention since the release of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories last October."
Sony,s archrival handheld, the DS, is retailing for only $129. If Sony is moving to drop the price of its PSP to a mere $149, it would make their machine extremely attractive to consumers who once shied away from the $250 price tag.
