Mario Party 8 pulled in UK because of "dirty" word

Category: Wii, Posted: 07/17/2007 at 01:15PM CDT by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

mario party 8Nintendo of Europe announced that Mario Party 8 was pulled from stores in the UK today.

Their reasoning was,"we have discovered that a small number of games contain the wrong version of the disk due to an assembly error."

No re-release date has been announced yet, but Nintendo said it'll be shortly.

CVG did some further digging and uncovered the real reason why the game was pulled. Apparently at one point in the game, one piece of dialog uses the world "spastic", which is considered offensive in the UK.

This game pull is actually the second time it has happened over the use of that word. Ubisoft quickly pulled their DS and PSP puzzle game Mind Quiz following complaints of the use "super spastic" in the game just a few weeks ago.

This can't bode too well for the game, especially since it garnered rather mediocre reviews upon its release. Feel free to read our review of the game too.

I don't see what's wrong with using the word "spastic" unless it's used in an offensive context. Is the UK the only country where the word is considered offensive? It hasn't been pulled in the US or Australia...

This sounds like a case of differing cultures. Remember the Austin Powers movie, The Spy who Shagged Me? In the US, shagged doesn't mean a thing, really. But in the UK, the word "shagged" is similar in meaning to a certain four letter swear word. In the US - it would be like a UK movie saying, "The Spy who Humped me."

I don't find it offensive... and I'm in the UK! Spastic dog....lol. (reference to my dad's mate, he calls that dog out of speed freaks spastic dog when it starts driving dodgeylyly...[/life story])

In the U.S. our connotation of "spastic" is "spazz" but both have different meanings. So calling a kid a spazz in the U.S. is just like calling him crazy, disruptive or generally annoying. As I remember from when Mind Quiz was pulled, the reason was because "spastic" is considered offensive to disabled people in the UK.
