PlayStation 2 still as popular as ever

Category: PlayStation 2, Posted: 08/15/2007 at 08:32PM CDT by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

ps2salesAccording to a report from Nielsen Media Research, the PlayStation 2 is still getting the most playing hours out of gamers. Even with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii out for close to a year (in the Xbox 360's case, close to two years), gamers are still clinging to the PlayStation 2.

For the month of June and from a survey of 33,000 people, 42% used the PlayStation 2 for gaming. Coming in second place is Microsoft's Xbox at 17%, third place is Microsoft's Xbox 360 at 8%, fourth place is Nintendo's GameCube at 5.8%, fifth place is Nintendo's Wii at 4% and last place is Sony's PlayStation 3 at 1.5%.

It's interesting to note that even today, PlayStation 2 games are still being readily developed and released while GameCube and Xbox games are slowly being phased out. The continual releases of PlayStation 2 games have certainly fostered the longevity of the console, even in this growing technological and advanced gaming age.

In Sony's Q1 2007 financial results, they're predicating that PlayStation 2 sales will soar over 10 million by March 2008. It'll be interesting to see if PSP sales can stay on track of 9 million units shipped by March 2008, especially with the new slim version coming out soon.

It's really no surprise. The PS2 has an amazing catalog of games, and good ones STILL keep coming out.
