According to IGN, Japanese Nintendo DS owners will be feeling a little lonely this year since Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest IX has been delayed till 2008. Originally planned for release this year, the reason for the delay is the usual, "needing extra time to make a game that will better satisfy players."
Even though it's guaranteed there will plenty of other DS games that'll be released for the holidays, Dragon Quest fans will have to wait even longer for #9. The demand is certainly present since Dragon Quest VIII became the fastest selling Japanese PlayStation 2 ever.
Not much information about the game has been released recently, only that it will feature turn-based combat and up to four player co-op multiplayer on Wi-Fi. In the meantime, U.S. Wii owners can expect Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors this winter.

For those who don't know, Dragon Quest is bigger in Japan than Final Fantasy is.
Like, freakishly more popular.
I knew this was going to happen! One thing I'm sure of is that it's going to be more difficult than ever to purchase a DS Lite in Japan once this game is on store shelves over there.
Aww.. why are they making it for only DS? Why not make it for an actual console?
Because SqEnix decided to give Sony the biggest slap in the face possible.
I'm loving every minute of it.
@Archem
The biggest slap in the face would be if it was 360 exclusive.
