Intel acquires Havok

Category: Industry, Posted: 09/15/2007 at 01:54AM CDT by Billy Wang, Previews Editor

havoklogoToday, Intel Corporation announced intentions to acquire Havok Inc. Financial terms weren't revealed and the deal will see Havok become a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel. It's the time of big business so I'm always on the lookout for acquisition news, but holy heck; I'm totally surprised by this announcement.

Renee J. James, vice president of Intel, said, "Havok is a proven leader in physics technology for gaming and digital content, and will become a key element of Intel's visual computing and graphics efforts. Havok will operate its business as usual, which will allow them to continue developing products that are offered across all platforms in the industry."

Havok is a software development company and are most famous for their physics engine technology that's been used in numerous games including BioShock, Half-Life 2, Halo 2, Crackdown, Stranglehold and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Also their technology has been used in movies too.

So what will come out of this deal? Will Havok pursue physics chips like competitor AGEIA? Now that Havok is with Intel, some nice hardware intergration can be pursued!

This sounds promising. With Havok stuff tailored more specifically with Intel hardware in mind, you can bet that there'll be better performance than in the past (assuming you use Intel stuffs). Then again, it's just physics...
