No Wii Sports 2 for now

Wii Sports 2When the Wii launched, Wii Sports was undoubtedly the best overall representation of what the console was all about. Sure, Twilight Princess was a long overdue love letter to Nintendo fanboys, but it wasn't the sole reason why the Wii has become successful.

That praise goes all to Wii Sports. Bundled with the system, it gave anyone the chance to dive into Nintendo's new console, no matter their age, gender, or video game experience. Without it, the Wii would not be where it is today.

So one would think that a sequel, with more sports to choose from and better controls, would be on the way, right? Not so according to Iwata who in a recent interview flatly stated that a new Wii Sports game would not be even a possibility in the near future.

"We're not going to take such an easy way, not by including seven new sports in the game since Wii Sports has five," he said. "We're not closing our doors to the possibility of a sequel, but it's definitely not coming out soon."

His reasoning behind this is that by taking the easy route, fans won't be captivated like they were with the original Wii Sports. Nintendo wants to surprise its customers, as opposed to giving them what they want.

"Our mission is to surprise people in a good way, and this became very clear as we made Nintendo DS and Wii. You can't open up a new market of customers if you can't surprise them."

Yeah cause we ALL want to perform daily exercise routines, practice our balance, or perform Yoda with our Wii. WiiFit or a new Wii Sports -- which would you prefer?

Nintendo is slowly losing it's grip on me. I'd rather get what I want than be "pleasantly surprised" when I get bored with a game after an hour.(if I'm a fanboy to any company, it's Nintendo, but they're doing all of this BS with the Wii and DS, it's just stupid, and if they're not careful I'll turn into a M$ fanboy)

I don't like how they're going casual-gaming style on me now. It's a real shame, especially since I'm a hardcore gamer.

"...or perform Yoda with our Wii."
Could I go in and correct it? Yes. Will I? No. This typo is far too entertaining, and will always serve as evidence if I need to prove that you, Tim, are nerdier than I :)

"Yeah cause we ALL want to perform daily exercise routines, practice our balance, or perform Yoda with our Wii. WiiFit or a new Wii Sports -- which would you prefer?"I'm not sure. They're completely different games, but the Balance Board does look very interesting."Nintendo is slowly losing it's grip on me. What do you mean, you will lose interest in Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii after an hour? I don't think so. Seriously, wake up.

True, I wouldn't have minded a second installment of Wii Sports, but Nintendo is saying something here that I agree with...that if they do the "easy" route...by doing a sequel, they'll probably have a game franchise that will start to look stale and old...like other game companies seem to do. So far, Nintendo has gone against the tide of "logic" by producing a machine that is "underpowered," and isn't geared to hardcore gamers. Whose to day they're logic of producing "surprises" for gamers isn't on the money too?
