Voodoo Extreme did some domain detective work today and discovered that ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, purchased elderscrollsonline.com.
Combine that with previous news of Mythic Entertainment co-founder Matt Firor heading up a new online gaming division for ZeniMax Media and you can get some big assumptions that ZeniMax may have plans for the online gaming scene.
Considering that ZeniMax's most popular RPG is Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls series, this may be an indication that Elder Scrolls may head to the online scene. So think about that: would you play an online version of The Elder Scrolls?
Personally, one of the series' draws to me was its entire focus on an awesome single-player experience. While exploring dungeons alone is a thrilling experience, exploring dungeons with a group of friends sounds even better. Heck, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion eventually got an unofficial multiplayer mod.
Still, since there are all these different towns to explore, people to meet and things to do in the game world, I think there's enough material for an MMORPG. The series also has a healthy backstory and lore for you fantasy buffs.
dude its about damn time!
Don't forget about the 300 USD investment, Billy Wang.
And to be blunt, I think Oblivion's whole experience came down to emulating MMO gameplay in a SP mode, and that's just stupid. So this makes sense.
Risky, though, it's not like the MMO market doesn't have stronger fantasy licenses, like Warhammer, Warcraft or LotR.
I will abandon the elder scrolls series if you have to pay a monthly fee...
I agree. With the pretty high success rate of Guild Wars it annoys me when new mmorpg's come out that could easily survive without a monthly fee have one when they need not.
Oh, how I want this. But yeah, a monthly fee would kill it.
