Suspicious onlookers everywhere are crying "conspiracy!" at Nintendo, accusing them of feeding the media with stories faking the hype about the demand for the Wii console. Ok, so this is no Kennedy assassination, but it's still a big deal. Big enough to piss off Nintendo.
The cause of the rumor began when two UK newspapers ran identical articles about families paying over the odds (a quaint way of saying over paid) for the Wii. Maxconsole immediately ate this up and suggested that it was no coincidence and that Nintendo could have injected it's own rumors to both publications to boost the demand of the Wii.
Nintendo defends itself by saying "...there is absolutely no truth whatsoever in what they have written, it is totally unsubstantiated and merely rumour that they are reporting as fact. We are certainly NOT distributing any press release to feed media with demand stories - we never have."
Sound's a lot like "I did NOT have sex with Monica Lewinski." But in all seriousness, it's a little unfair to make accusations based on a duplicate story. Click around the internet and you'll find the same stories in 5 different places. Hell, click on the source link below and you'll see the same story there. It's bogus to make statements of conspiracy based upon that.

im pretty sure wii's are still selling fast
Story sounds bogus as hell to me. Have you seen any store with a Wii in stock? And if you have, was the number of units available more than what you can count on one hand? If so, then you live in a very anti-Nintendo area, my friend.
"Have you seen any store with a Wii in stock? And if you have, was the number of units available more than what you can count on one hand? If so, then you live in a very anti-Nintendo area, my friend."
There's a store near me that has them stocked all the time. Of course, not many people know they actually sell video game systems (it's a console gaming cafe type place).
If I were that news paper, I would apologize; you don't want to get on Nintendo's bad side.
well this is just silly, it's pretty much a fact that wii's are relatively hard to find, and they're selling well. on top of that, what's nintendo supposed to say? "Umm, can you guys stop buying our stuff for a while so we can stockpile?"
if you want to argue conspiracy, you should argue that Nintendo is purposely producing wii's slowly so that their is a shortage, and thus a frenzy
well if you want a wii in stock go to sweden :p never seen them being out of stock if the shop even sells them. Most in sweden are serious gamers i guess.
I know where I live (just outside of Portland) I ALWAYS see Wiis in stock at Wal Mart, and from time to time at the GameStops. (I also see them pretty often in Seattle.) Of course, I've yet to see one in-stock in San Fran or LA. I guess it's because the pacific northwest in the US is Microsoft Country.
No conspiracy, just excited people who don't do research.
They're just jalous the Wii sells so much :P
