Dad sells GH III because his kid smoked a joint

Category: Xbox 360, Posted: 12/06/2007 at 10:55PM CST by Frank Ling, Content Contributor

GH JointA dad in Canada decided to do the ultimate for his 15 year-old son...hit the streets in search of the very rare Guitar Hero III game in his neck of the woods.

After lots of sweat and miles, he scored and went home to give his son the grand prize. All was cool until he arrived home early.

Read the saga in the dad's own words on his posted ad from eBay:

"So I spent who knows how many hours of my life trying to get "Guitar Hero 3" for the Nintendo Wii for my 15 year old son who has been begging for it since he was born (well not really but he's wanted it for awhile). So after waiting in lines and going into every game store in the city over the last 2 weeks (practically being laughed at when I asked for guitar hero 3) I finally got lucky and got one at EB Games (they just got a shipment of them 25 minutes before I walked in!).

"So I was so relieved in that I had finally got the Holy Grail of Xmas presents pretty much just in the nick of time. I couldn't wait to spread the jubilance to my son.
Then, yesterday, I came home from work early and what to I find? My innocent little boy smoking pot in the backyard with 2 of his delinquent friends."

The father has decided that he can't give his son the gift because he doesn't want to reward bad behavior. He's a school teacher and says he'll take GH III off of eBay if anyone can convince him that he should still give his son the game.

"Anyways, I am now finding it hard to justify rewarding him with this gift after he so greatly disappointed me. I know smoking a joint isn't the end of the world, but if you can convince me that he deserves the gift, then I will end the auction. You will have to be very convincing. I am an elementary school teacher and I know that rewarding bad behavior is just asking for more of the same..."

What do you think the father should do and why?

I like how it's always the friends that are the delinquents... and innocent along with 15yo boy do not belong in the same sentence.

It's not shocking the a 15yo kid was doing that. I'm glad he realizes that. What I would do is not give it to him for a minute. What are you going to do, never give him something good again? He will get the game and a lot more and he will keep smoking, sorry pops!

Tell the kid "I saw you smoke pot with your friends" then say "because I love you and that'll you'll never do it again (*cough*) I'll give u GH3 for Xmas". "But if I catch you doing that again I'm selling your Wii"
Booya!

Nice pic btw :P

This is fake as hell.

You see this every few months. Just someone looking to play the sympathy angle to get more eBay dollars.

And yes, I'm a bitter woman. I've seen eBay turn from a cool place to get some deals to a haven of vultures in the short span of five years.

Oh, good. I thought this was going to be about how he somehow decided that playing GH made his son smoke... lol.

In any case, I agree with his decision. In the words of a hilarious man "Drugs are bad, mmkay?"

Though, I myself am more of a "Do as I say, not as I do" kind of person. If you catch my drift. ;)

That'll teach that kid not to get caught. He'll just be sneakier next time.

Seems like eBay removed the posting.

Frank, your job when you wake up: find out why. Drive to eBay headquarters if you must!

Hopefully it was good bud.

"I like how it's always the friends that are the delinquents... "

I'm glad it's that way sometimes though. I remember when I was about that age my dad caught me smoking a bong. Literally I was inhaling it at the time, and my dad blamed my mate, who was just sat next to me. He wasn't allowed to my house for a year or so, but I got off scot free.

As for the story at hand, how is it rewarding bad behaviour? It's not like he caught him smoking a joint then is giving him GH3 straight after. Is he never going to give him anything nice again? As that'd surely also be rewarding his behaviour...

"What do you think the father should do and why?"

Psychological torture. It's way more efficient than any form of punishment

Posted by Flarty on 12/07/2007 at 08:43AM

i think the dad should smoke a joint and play GH3 with his son :P

"Frank, your job when you wake up: find out why. Drive to eBay headquarters if you must!"

I agree with Brendon.

I'd probably do the same thing (although I'd take it back to the store rather than putting it up on Ebay). There's consequences for doing things you know you shouldn't be doing.

I think the kid was working up to play guitar hero with method. As long there's no sXe bands on there.

All the best musicians made it to the top pushing multi-colored buttons while smoking pot!

Wow, that's awful. And just for the record, I do not condone inhaling...or poorly made ascii squares. But I love the Chris Isaak's XMas album.

"Seems like eBay removed the posting. Frank, your job when you wake up: find out why. Drive to eBay headquarters if you must!"

"...I agree with Brendon."

Lol. No need to do that...the listing is still up and alive. The dad even updated the situation by saying..."I showed him the listing... at first he didn't believe what he was reading, but once the truth hit him, he was not amused!" Now, B & B, go to the corner and slap each other till I say "stop."

Current pricing of GHIII? a tad over $201 at the time of this writing.

He really shouldn't give the kid the game. Seriously this guy needs to grow a spine and don't teach the kid that it's OK just to do whatever he disapproves of

Posted by lskennedy on 12/07/2007 at 02:15PM

I am firmly against smoking weed (friend of mine died in a car accident over summer whilst high), and i think the dad shoulda just broken the thing, or burned it, but selling it on ebay, makes sense. The kids dumb for smoking weed anyway.

Posted by Quasar on 12/07/2007 at 02:55PM

Some would say the kid was dumb for getting *caught.* But in any event, after reading that ad, it makes me wonder just how much the dad knows about his kid and how close to him he is.

Posted by Archem on 12/07/2007 at 06:53PM

I think the kid should get punished. I personally wouldn't sell it, but rather, refuse service. Take the Wiimotes with you, lock the game in a lock box, but don't sell the game! It'll be a bitch later on to re-find it, and besides, this is a punishment with a future reward opened up to you. Not to mention the torturous effect of playing it in front of him.

YEAH DUDE!

Posted by ninjalegend on 12/09/2007 at 12:43AM

More horrible parenting at work. I'm not against or for smoking weed, but I digress. Why does not this idiot parent try to find out why junior is smoking? Is it because of peer pressure? Because he doesn't feel loved by dad? Maybe dad beats him, or forces some crappy religion of values on the kid. Or maybe he just likes it. Then go from there. It is no wonder this world is so fu*^ed up. "I know Cletus, I'll fix this here problem before I know whats wrong!" His stupidity comes through the internet and smacks me in my face. Kind of like my Guitar hero band name. DEITYSTRIKE.

Maybe it was his dad's stash and he was mad at his son smoking his last doobie!
