So the word is that Infinity Ward is not working on Call of Duty 5, instead Treyarch will handle the console exclusive game. This seems pretty consistent with what happened to Call of Duty 3 but fans are groaning because Call of Duty 3 wasn't, well, Infinity Ward material (which could be the problem itself).
The rumor mill is still churning and the latest word is that Call of Duty 5 will not only take place during World War II (ugh, again) but also take place during the Pacific War.
As of today, only one other AAA game tried that theme to rather mediocre results: Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault.
I'll gladly admit, I have yet to finish Pacific Assault because of the game's ludicrous checkpoint saving system and difficulty. But I found the game's infamous AI spawning system to be not that bad.
Pacific assault is the one where you start in the boat and have to do some fire extingwishin' right?
MOH:PA was a very difficult game, and man, was it a blast. ALthough, i'd be dissapointed if thats where cod5 was going. It might have been fun, but the story didnt keep me to involved.
Grr... We just got OUT of that war! It's not that I don't enjoy games set there, it's just that, well, it's getting tired. Let us PLEASE not go backwards! What was that one quote from the first Call of Duty? "Not one step backwards, comrade"?
I don't get why we need CoD to go back to the tired WW2. CoD4 was one of the best games ever. Hopefully Infinity Ward will move on to make a good modern setting FPS.
I heard over a year ago that the Treyarch CoDs were all going to be set in WW2, so this is kinda old news to me.
Dr.Aaron, I think you're thinking of Medal of Honor: Rising Sun.
BahamutBBob - Still, I can't believe no one got the message. CoD4's popularity should prove that people don't WANT WW2 anymore. Hell, a fantasy setting would be better than that tired ass war at this point.
The last WW2 game i've played was RtCW and only because it had zombies and crazy futuristic technology in it. WW2 is a theme that should be used only once in a while, not every freaking year.
Like YukoAsho said, look at CoD4 and get a clue, people are tired of WW2.
Man sometimes it feels like ww2 lasted centuries. I still enjoy ww2 games to an extent but crap it's not like there aren't other settings to use.
If it's not WWII made by Infinity Ward then no thanks.......Atleast Treyarch could do one in Vietnam or something besides WWII. I'm sure there's a niche that this setting will appeal too, but atleast developers could smell a dead horse before they beat it into the ground.
I don't think they should even call it CoD5 if it's going back to WWII...that's confusing for people that don't know what's going on.
Call it CoD:Back to the same tired ass war that everyone else has used and damnit we're going to do it again.
I'm sick of WWII games. Seriously.
The fact that there's palm trees and rocks instead of hedgerows and nazis doesn't change the fact that you're still stuck with crappy guns and the same tired crap we've done for years....
I agree, rtanger, I'm ready for more CoDs like Modern Warfare. I didn't think they would do as good of job as the SoFs did before it, but I was very wrong. WWII is getting played out like a mofo.
Looks like I'll go back to ignoring Call of Duty.
Why??????!!! why have two dev teams on one title? How dumb and idea is that?!!!!!
Activision just isn't going up on my list these days. Merging with Blizzard, giving every other CoD to Treyarch, and possibly sending us back to the 40s is really causing me to build up some serious resentment. I'll likely still buy it because I'm a big CoD-head, but dammit, I hope this doesn't happen (or better yet, I hope it doesn't sell well).
Yuko - I'm not a CoD fan. I didn't like the CoD4 singleplayer, and was half interested by the multiplayer for a week or so. I honestly don't care if it goes back to WW2, I'm not going to buy a CoD game again.
Seems like the game developers are hurting for new war game ideas. Get ready for Civil War games!
How 'bout Medieval Wars...Medieval TOTAL Wars!
