Windows Vista SP1 to bring over 300 fixes

Category: PC, Posted: 12/13/2007 at 11:22AM CST by Sean Pincombe, Staff Writer

Vista SP1With the release of Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista just around the corner (Q1 2008), Microsoft have been quite the busy little bees over the past few days.

Yesterday saw the release of the Vista SP1 RC open beta, allowing users of the Vista operating system to download the service pack before it is officially released.

They've also made available a 47-page document detailing over 300 hot-fixes that will be included in Service Pack 1. The list isn't completed, so you can expect more fixes to be added before the official release next year.

Entries in the list range from a fix for a problem in which optical disks turn blank after being formatted with Vista's Live File System, to a patch for a glitch that generates an error message when large files are copied from one Vista-based computer to another over a network.

There's also an update designed to improve Vista's speed when its operating on a computer linked to a virtual private network, as well as updates to improve Internet Explorer's streaming video performance and prevent data loss in USB devices connected to Vista PCs. And just for the hell of it, Microsoft also added a Venezuelan time zone.

Unfortunately, one of the main problems with Vista -- application compatibility -- has not been majorly addressed. Better luck next time, huh.

I have a huge problem with the way Vista moves/copies files. I work with very large data files at my job. Vista is oh, about a1000x slower than XP on average during a copy. Fix that and I will love Vista.

Vista is shaping up nicely ..by the time they reach sp2 in 3-4 years it might actually be usable.
