Uncharted: Drake's Fortune fails to top the charts

Category: PlayStation 3, Posted: 12/15/2007 at 05:41PM CST by Frank Ling, Editorial Director

unchartedEven with all the excellent reviews that Uncharted was getting, it seems as though the public either doesn't agree or isn't interested in that sort of game. According to NPD group, Drake's Fortune only pulled in 117,000 sales in the month of November and failed to rank in the top ten software sales list.

In comparison, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare cashed in 444,000 copies. Why U: DF failed to catch the imagination of the public is hard to tell. Some are pinning it on the subject matter of the game itself-sort of a Tomb Raider type adventure setting. Others are thinking that the advertising campaign fell on deaf ears because it was aimed at a narrow target audience.

Recently, Sony dumped their 10-year relationship with advertising firm TBWA to get some new blood into their ad campaigns for the PS3.

Take a look at the ad for Uncharted below. What do you think?

or it's...only on the PS3?

Maybe NaughtyDog should have stuck to the Jak & Daxter / Crash Bandicoot type of game? Either that or they should have mentioned "From the creators of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.." in the commercial.
*shrugs*

It did not reach huge numbers because the console itself has not reached huge numbers. This is is speculated to be the reason why games like Metal Gear Solid 4 have been delayed, to wait for a larger install base of the console so that sales of software will be higher.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune would be a game I'd pickup if I owned a Playstation 3, but I don't own one at this time and probably won't for another 6 months until the price is a little bit less ($100 AU cheaper would be what makes me buy one tomorrow).

Orange Box, Ratchet, Uncharted, UT3, CoD4, Assassins Creed... PS3 owners have their hands full this christmas, so i'm not surprised

Posted by lskennedy on 12/15/2007 at 07:09PM

Yeah they do.....n't.

cmon, thats 5 GAMES!!! and AC has been out long enough for most who rly wanted it to conquer it. UT3, Isnt even doing good on the pc, its roots. COD4, Well, ok, its COD, everyone loves cod. Ratchet, Fun filled killer app.
OB, if u dont own it, thars a problem. BUT people might not want orange box for the inclusion of half life 2 and such, if they have never played hl1 (I still need to beat that darn game).

SO i think it is poor advertising, not much hype, and the ps3 not selling well enough.

In due time young padawn. The thing is, about 7 months ago, Final Fantasy 8 (Yes, i mean 8) Was #7 on top 20 titles sold on amazon.com. Games take time like that. I would get it.

Since it was only available for two weeks in Nov we will have to wait for Dec figures to be sure but that's certainly not a good sign. Weird too as all my ps3 owning friends have been waiting for it to come out so they'll actually have something to play other than folding@home and blu-rays heh.

Posted by SoDev on 12/15/2007 at 10:55PM

Kinda sad really. I hear it's a really good game, and those numbers are pathetic. Hopefully it will do better in Dec. (with word of mouth) like pope mentioned.

I think the generalized description of "pretty much Tomb Raider with a guy" isn't helping much, at least my friends with PS3s said that with an air of indignation, so....yeah.

Posted by Oblivion Lotus on 12/16/2007 at 12:28AM

Yeah, that trailer really makes me think of Tomb Raider... And honestly, if I want Tomb Raider, I'll just go play Tomb Raider.

Posted by Brendon on 12/16/2007 at 12:57AM

That's a shame. Other than Portal, this was probably my favorite game of the year.

While i did not care for the Jak and Crash games, i do like Uncharted. I appluadu Naughty Dog for trying something different and not becoming too complacent, which they could of easily done and made another Jak.
This game only resembles Tomb Raider in it's setting, but that is where the similarities end. I think the game resembles Indiana Jones a bit more.

I guess if it's not Mario, Solid Snake or Samus, people will not give it a chance.

Yeah, um, you know what else resembles Indiana Jones? Tomb Raider.

Seriously, the demo on PSN pretty much screamed to me "Tomb Raider meets Gears of War."

"trying something different "

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT JEDI?!?!?!

Posted by Krakn3Dfx on 12/16/2007 at 09:58PM

This game is awesome, and should rank as a "must-have" title for PS3 owners. I'm about 6 hours into it, and it's still as riveting as it was the first hour, which was awesome on its own. Can't wait til I get to sit down and play more.

It's a shame when great, well made games fail to reach "acceptable" sales numbers, I hope it picks up over December, this and R&C are, IMO the two biggest system sellers for Sony, and they should be pounding the advertising streams with footage and screen caps from this game.

Ok, we need some new news people. I am getting bored of you DRAKE!

Posted by jedipoodoo547 on 12/17/2007 at 01:00AM

^^^^^Some of you sound like everybody else, drones. I have been hearing about similarities to Tomb Raider on every message board about this game. Nobody really cares! Just play it, enjoy it, and stop your whining already! Halo plays like Half Life, Mario plays like Ratchet & Clank, just about every RPG plays like Final Fantasy, blah, blah, blah!

Posted by lskennedy on 12/17/2007 at 01:23AM

Ok, i understand what your saying, but to say mario is like Ratchet and clank?!?!? thats like saying that my foot hurts is equally as bad as having cancer.

But i get what your saying.

Play Resident evil something or another.

Posted by jedipoodoo547 on 12/17/2007 at 01:56AM

Kennedy, i apologize, i was out of line. I was blinded by Sony fan-boyism for a moment (lol). I have Drake's Fortune and enjoy it for what it is. Will it be remembered as a groundbreaking experience? No. But it will be a good rental for most. I do wish the game were longer for $60.

Posted by goatlinks on 12/17/2007 at 08:24AM

I think this looks AWESOME. If I had a ps3 I'd totally be on board with this one.

And my foot really does hurt...It hurts WAY more than cancer.

Thats right, I said it....(sincerest apologies to those that I ACTUALLY offended.)

Posted by Krakn3Dfx on 12/17/2007 at 12:40PM

jedipoodoo547, OMG, you insinuated that Mario was a R&C ripoff!
See, if you did that in a public place, things would be thrown at you. :P

Posted by jedipoodoo547 on 12/17/2007 at 04:53PM

Goat, my tookas hurts more then your foot (lol).

I actually own all of the games Mario, Ratchet & Clank, Drakes Fortune. I love them all.

Posted by lskennedy on 12/18/2007 at 12:24AM

BUT DO YOU OWN RE?!?!?! lol.

Posted by jedipoodoo547 on 12/19/2007 at 12:56AM
