When will we see another 360 price cut?

Category: Xbox 360, Posted: 12/19/2007 at 04:30PM CST by Tim Mellish, Contributor

down 360 Microsoft is poised to take another whack at the Sony fortress if they decide to lower the price of the Xbox 360 come the first quarter of 2008.

According to some veteran analysts of the videogame market, lowering the price of the Xbox 360 during January would be another right step in Microsoft's chances to winning the console war for this generation.

Microsoft has the advantage of stellar titles which warrant buying the Xbox 360, a cheaper manufacturing system than Sony, and still advantageous position of releasing a year early. Some suggest that Microsoft create another Halo3 bundle at a reduced price.

While this sounds good on paper, these analysts are not factoring in the Wii. Nintendo's system is still one of the hottest tickets this holiday season. Without a doubt they are going to claim the top spot, perhaps before even the end of the year, with the most consoles sold. Lowering the price of the Xbox 360 should also be a response to Nintendo's continued success at the $250 price point.

Will we see a price cut for the Xbxo 360? Hard to say, but only Microsoft can give us the final answer to this question and with Halo 3 still churning out good numbers it is easy to see why MS would be content at the moment with where their console is priced.

Hopefully they will, causing Sony to but the price of the PS3 ^_^

MS will have to eventually cut the price if they want to keep their momentum. There are only so many people willing to shell out 300+ bucks for a console. But they also have shareholders chomping at the bit for the gaming division to show more of a profit so they can't afford to take too much of a loss on each consoles. Historically, from what I've read, consoles don't really hit the stratosphere until they are in the sub 200$ range. If MS can manage to offer that much of an advanced console for LESS than the wii they just might be able to blunt the wiis growth a bit. The question is when.

With the last price drop just a few months old, I'd be surprised if they dropped it again so soon. The fact is, they're not competing with the Wii in the same way they're competing with the PS3. I don't think there are nearly as many people trying to choose between the Wii and the 360 as there are people trying to choose between the 360 and the PS3. The budget pricing of the Wii makes it possible for those who want to be able to buy it along with one of the two more expensive consoles. Hence the terms 'Wii60' or 'PSWii'.

Meanwhile, MS still has an advantage over the PS3 in pricing, as well as library and quality of online service. Why should they drop their price when they're already beating up on Sony? Maybe we'll see a price drop when the PS3 finally get their big name exclusives out, like MGS or Final Fantasy. But I doubt we'll see it before then, if at all until at least a year since the last price drop.

I am sure hoping that they will. That would possibly bring the 360 into my price range. Yay!
