Xbox 360 backwards compatibility ending

Category: Xbox 360, Posted: 01/10/2008 at 02:36PM CST by Demetri Kouvalis, Features Editor

XboxOne of the many perks that the Xbox 360 has to offer is the ability to play games from its older self, the original Xbox. As of now Xbox 360 owners are capable of playing 465 titles from the original Xbox without many problems.

But at CES this week, Albert Penello marketing manager for the Xbox 360 told Kotaku that the most recent update to the list could very well be the last.

"I don't know if we have plans to do any more releases," Penello said "it feels like we kind of hit the point of diminishing returns there. For the most part, we've crossed off games that people want to play," he said, adding that "there's always going to be a notable exception here or there."

Also according to Penello, internal data shows low playtime on Xbox Live for BC games with the exception of Halo 2. So do you think Xbox 360 owners are satisfied with what they got in terms of backwards capatibility, or should Microsoft push to release the rest of the games still not updated for the 360?

There are still many games that they didn't put on that we as gamers would love to still play... I mean they took time and put games like Chicago Enforcers and Mike Tyson Boxing on the list but ignored games like Warriors and other cult classics that would have served them better... I can understand technological issues but it seems to me that took an easy road by doing what they could get away with early and then use fatigue as an excuse... If they wish to stop doing their job... they should release some modding tools for the 360...

I think they've done just fine with offering backwards compatibility on Xbox 360. It's been over two years since the Xbox 360 was released, I doubt you'll hear much complaining about them directing resources away from BC.

I'll just wait for the backlash, or the silence.....i predict silence, they've done a good job. I don't know of that many popular games that don't play on 360's.

BC is somewhat relevant when a console is first launched and there aren't that many games available to play yet, as well as many games recently put out for the previous console. But two years after the fact, when there are a ton of great games out? Not a big issue.

There are still (huge) bugs in the emulation of one of the original Xbox games that I have, and a few more that aren't on the list that I wanted to play. I'm not going to buy an original Xbox when MS promised the entire catalog of Xbox games playable on the 360 at some point.

In short: screw you Microsoft.

^Indeed.

Having said that, be thankful that yor current gen console still plays the games of it's last gen sibling...

WHAT!?!?!?!?

K, my Xbox is dead, gone, buried. It bit the dust. I wanna play my old favorites, dammit!

Are they gonna at least fix the bugs in the games?

Xbox's are sooo cheap right now. if you really want to play your old games just grab a second hand one.

That's my thinking. Why bother with all that when you could just (in my case) whip out the old Xbox and play 'em on there, with all your saves still entact? With the ridiculous amount of video inputs on TV's these days, it should be more than feasible.

Or if you still have your dead box lying around, go to http://www.oldschoolgamer.ca and get that bad boy fixed. Unfortunately, between this and the PS3 removing BC, it's become clear that repair services are going to be very important.

Jambo, re-read my previous post, I'm not going to buy one to play the few games I haven't played, just like 3 years ago. Sudpuzzer, not everyone had an original Xbox. Myself included.
