One of the things that the Xbox 360 is known for is the achievement system. Gamers who play Xbox 360 can unlock points by completing certain tasks in the game to show off how big of a nerd they really are. Sony is realizing the brilliance of this idea and is going to implement their own type of achievement system.
Sony already announced a "Trophy Room" idea that will be made availabe when Home is released to show off the trophies that you managed to win while playing PS3 games. Other than that we don't know much, like how you will exactly obtain these trophies, and if every game will have this trophy system implemented. The PS3's new achievement system will be more than just a number that you can show off to your friends however.
According to Eric Lampel, director of the Playstation Network, "achievements will recognise our consumers' gaming skills and loyalty in new ways". What that actually means is anyone's guess, but the marketing people over at Microsoft sure knew what they were looking for to boost up sales. Achievements definitely play a role in most gamers decisions when it comes to really playing all that the game offers from beginning to end.

in the begining... when i first heard of microsoft adding "achievements" to games, i couldnt fathom how much it would impact my gaming experience. what i originally thought of as a "throw away" idea, that didnt serve much use beyond bragging rights to the hardcore gamer. has not only added replay value of some titles (by giving the player goals/challenges to accomplish). but also as a way to focus gameplay.
in open world titles like "crackdown" & "elderscrolls", there is so much to do AND see, they use to overwhelm me to the point that i wouldnt bother. adding achievements to oblivion, for example, allowed a casual way to keep track of my place within the main story, plus focused my world exploration towards points of interest outside of that experience. the assasin's guild being a personal favorite... 300+ hours later.
so it personally sucks when i look at the ps3 and see them making the same mistake i did in regards to the value of achievements. but adding them to the ps3 so late down the line? they should instead be focusing upon making "home" a completely uniqe experience to separate themselves from the pack.
constantly... i find myself wishing that microsoft had done with "true fantasy live online", what sony is tyring to do with "home". if it had shipped on every hdd, and was free to play, i think things in japan would be very different today. heck... they could have probably even charged a monthly fee given how popular "level 5" and WoW have become in japan.
It would nice if sony added achievements that you could purchase games with, unlike Xbox's where they just make your e-penis larger
LOL Alex.
Alex, while it does occasionally happen, publishers are generally not in the business in giving games away for free. Crazy as it sounds, it's tough to make money that way, and make money is what these companies are desparately trying to do.
