Gamers, pat yourselves on the back because the U.S. video game industry reached epic proportions this year. Thanks to our wallets, the U.S. game industry posted sales of $17.94 billion in 2007 -- this excludes PC game sales. This marks a 43% increase over sales in 2006.
Console hardware sales increased by 73% to hit $5.12 billion in 2007. Overall hardware sales increased by 54% and total video game software sales increased by 34% to hit $8.64 billion in 2007 as well.
For December, total gaming sales hit $4.82 billion, which was up 28% from the same month last year. For November, total gaming sales hit $2.6 billion, so December was a healthy spending month for games.
The Nintendo DS was the month's top seller with 2.47 million units sold. The Wii came in second with 1.35 million units sold, the Xbox 360 came in third with 1.26 million units sold and the PlayStation 3 staggered in last with only 797,000 units sold.

2. Wii - 6.2 million (total: 7.38 million)
3. Xbox 360 - 4.62 million (total: 9.15 million)
4. PS2 - 3.97 million (total: 41.12 million)
5. PSP - 3.82 million (total: 10.47 million)
6. PS3 - 2.56 million (total: 3.25 million)

1. Call of Duty 4 - Xbox 360 - 1.47 million
2. Super Mario Galaxy - Wii - 1.40 million
3. Guitar Hero III - PS2 - 1.25 million
4. Wii Play - Wii - 1.08 million
5. Assassin's Creed - Xbox 360 - 893,000

Uh, last month WAS December, right? So which is it, $4.82 or $2.6? Maybe the $2.6 is referring to November (two months ago?)
