There's no doubting the Xbox 360 hasn't had the best of luck when it comes to reliability. In fact that would be putting it mildly. But what is more frustrating to Xbox 360 owners is that there is no definite action, or set of conditions which lead to the hardware failure. It seems random, and uncompromising. Even worse is fixes for RROD Xbox 360's range from the absurd remedy of wrapping the unit in a towel, to the aggravating ordeal of sending it back to Microsoft in hopes of receiving a new unit which works.
Finally, someone who was intimately involved in the Xbox 360 development is talking. Remaining anonymous for obvious reasons, the interview is lengthy, eye opening, but ultimately welcome because of the answers to provides. Turns out the current rate of units failure is around 30% and those units die very early on in their life cycle. Those who have had their Xbox 360 from day one and still working can sleep a little sounder.
Overall, the biggest problem Microsoft has is they rushed the production of the Xbox 360 in order to beat Sony out the door. That resulted in a product which wasn't tested in the way it should have been and is why the Xbox 360 is having such a hard time even today.
Check out the whole article since it is really an interesting read.

Everyday I feel lucky since I have a launch version of the X360, and whilst yeah... this Aussie Summer heat gave it a RROD about 3 weeks ago, I turned it off, left it off until about 4pm and turned it back on, continuing my adventure in Assassin's Creed. That's the only RROD I've received and if they used cheap hardware components as this guy is saying than I'm off to buy a lottery ticket.
I don't know why, but that "interview" just seemed so fake...
I was reading the 8bit Joystick article on the way to work and it was a very interesting read. I can definitely see M$ rushing a product in an attempt to beat out any competition before they even release.
I am the kind of person that will share my opinion and not agree to just for the sake of agreeing with something. I do not bash or "troll", but i will give credit where credit is due. I honestly do not care what people think if i have something valid to say.
Granted their might be people out there that do not have these 360 problems, but, another Red Ring Of Death for me and i am selling all of my Xbox 360 games and accessories, i don't care how good the games are. I am on 7 360s now, including the Halo 3 Falcon that i bought for my nephew (he has a PS3 now and is quite happy). I will just cut my losses and move on. If games are released muti-platform, i will almost certainly buy the PS3 version from now on, regardless if the graphics take a hit, at least i will have a frustrating-free gaming experience on a reliable piece of hardware. From what i went through, can anyone blame me?
On top of that, i have not been able to sign into Live for longer then i can remember. I have 3 demos in my queue that have been downloading for quite some time ( i can't even sign into Live to cancel them). The few times i have was able to sing into Live, i was signed out in less then 5 minutes.
I blame nobody but myself and you the gamer for continuing to support products like this. Just remember, we vote with our wallets and as long as we buy these products, we will be served sh*t, regardless of the quality. As soon a a high profile game is released like Halo 3, all of the system's faults are now swept under the rug, that is how Microsoft takes advantage of the public, because people have to play Halo 3. Just as Microsoft clearly rushed this piece of sh*t out there, i quickly rushed out to buy it at launch, instead of sitting back and waiting until they released a superior system. I can guarantee when Microsoft releases their next beta box, regardless of quality, people will buy it. It is time to say no!
From reading various forums and articles, there are way too many fanboys that do not like to bash their platform of choice even though the 360 is a clearly flawed system. I don't care how good the games are, what good are they when you don't have a system to play them on because they are constantly being repaired and you can't sign into Live to play the multi-player portion of them, thus reducing the replay value.
In the future, i personally will not buy another Microsoft product. I would not even think about upgrading to Vista or selecting the option to have Microsoft Sinc in my new Ford car (if i decide to buy one). I don't need the Red Ring Of Death in my vehicle (lol).
If Microsoft would stand up and say 'Okay, we f**ked up, this is a faulty piece of crap and we admit that", i would have more respect for them.
I sympathize with you. While it is possible that you are that unlucky, have you wondered if something you're doing is helping kill all those fragile 360s? (The odds are easy to calculate for a 30% failure rate biting you 7 times in a row: 0.30^7 = 0.0002187 = 0.02187%, or about a 1 in 4572 chance. Possible, but very unlikely.) The thing needs cool air to survive, and the best way for that is to sit upright on a hard, flat surface with room all around, most importantly to the back, where the hot exhaust is directed. I have mine sitting sideways so the hot air blows out toward a wall 2 feet away (rather than having only inches of space toward the back of the cabinet).
Don't take this as support for Microsoft! I advocate a humiliating, expensive class-action lawsuit against them over this issue. If this "Deep Throat" source is the real deal, he could provide evidence of design defects finding their way into the product *intentionally*. That's both actionable (civil case) and illegal (criminal case).
Cobra, i have my all of my consoles on a hard surface entertainment stand. They are all right on the top shelf and i have an extremely ample amount of space around them so they can breathe. I take very good care of all consoles and they all look like they are right out of the box brand new. If something is well made in the first place, you should not have to worry about sitting the system horizontally or vertically. For instance, because the design my entertainment area changed, i used to have the Playstation 3 sitting upright, now it is vertical. Never once have i had a problem with my PS3, other then it would not play one of my Blu-ray discs, which was fixed when i reset the system. Otherwise, currently, it has performed flawless.
I have a Sony HDTV, MP3 player, Blu-Ray PLAYER, PS3, PS2, PS1. Nver once have i had a defect in any of these products. I am not a Sony fanboy, but a consumer who wants to buy a reliable product. The proof is in the proverbial pudding.
So, it is nothing that i am doing wrong. As Han Solo would say "Never tell me the odds!"
