Not content with Assassin's Creed being just another console port, Ubisoft has pulled out the big guns, giving it minimum specs that will make your PC wince.
While Crysis currently holds the crown of most insanely high required PC specs, Assassin's Creed looks like it just might beat out the German shooter.
The below was found in a new entry in the Ubisoft support knowledge database:
Supported OS: Windows XP / Vista (only)
Processor: Dual core processor 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ or better recommended)
RAM: 2 GB (3 GB recommended)
Video Card: 256 MB DirectX 10.0–compliant video card or DirectX 9.0–compliant card with Shader Model 3.0 or higher (512 MB video card recommended) (see supported list)*
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0 or 10.0 compliant sound card (5.1 sound card recommended)
DirectX Version: DirectX 10.0 libraries (included on disc)
DVD-ROM: DVD-ROM dual-layer drive
Hard Drive Space: 12 GB
As you can see these minumum specs are only slightly than higher Crysis' minimum specs, requiring a bit more in the RAM department.
Now, if the performance of Crysis on lower systems is anything to go by, Assassin's Creed will run pretty badly if you don't have the latest and greatest. If you indeed don't have the latest and greatest, it may be a cheaper and smarter option to buy a 360 or a PS3 to play Assassin's Creed, instead of upgrading your RAM, Video Card, CPU, etc.

WTF?! Dual core 2.6ghz since when is that needed for a game? thats a total of 5.2ghz most game can do whit half of it!... well seem like i shouldnt have svaed some money on my cpu, but i am pretty sure i can run it anyway its all up to coding
it was easy to see crytek changed some major things between retail and demo version of crysis seeing how i could have a much higher detail level in the demo then in retail whit same framerate
And people wonder why PC game sales have been dropping off.
Yeah no kidding.
I wonder why game developers cannot just optimize a game to run well on an average computer AND high end systems... much like Half Life 2, many computers can run it, but the option to run it with all of the options turned up full blast is still there if you have a kick-ass computer. *sigh*
My computer can handle it but honestly, the day my old computer (3800+, 6800 Ultra, 1GB RAM) couldn't do high settings and AA in Oblivion yet my X360 could was the day I realised any cross-PC/console game is pretty much a buy on console. My little 4800+, 8600GT, 2GB RAM can not possibly run Assassin's Creed to the same level my X360 can, I knew this before these system requirements were announced.
I think the one exception was the Orange Box, but Valve is very PC-centric, Bioshock I bought on Steam and X360, prefered it on my X360 to be honest, so yeah...
Assassin's Creed, much like Stranglehold and its PC Requirements, is very console-centric.
Yea and yet the game started out as a pc game
Pssh, these requirements are tame, compared to what I have sitting in my box at home!
3GB of ram! That cannot be right. I can still play it, but still.
well i am finding it very hard to believe this specially since the soiurce link is broken
The Kotaku link works for me
What happens when the ram requirments surpass what the os can handle n e 1? lol. And i agree, people wonder why computer games are slipping.
