Just a day before the wraps were set to come off the 3870 X2, a Chinese website has released an epically sized 32 page benchmark report on the new card, and it's looking mighty fine!
Middle Eastern Gamers were nice enough to go through and pick out some of the results. In the tests the 3870 X2 was pitted against an 8800Ultra card and the results are very exciting.
Default 3DMark06 test:
- Radeon HD 3870 X2 score: 18,467
- 8800Ultra score: 14,197
3DMark06 test @ 2560 x 1600:
- Radeon HD 3870 X2 score: 12,578
- 8800Ultra score: 8,746
In the game benchmarks, the 3870 X2 scored almost 30% more the 8800Ultra in Call of Duty 4 @ 1280 x 1024. In F.E.A.R. the 3870 X2 scored 20% more than the 8800Ultra. The 8800Ultra did beat the 3870 X2 in the Crysis and BioShock benchmarks, but it's likely due to problems with the Crossfire drivers not working correctly.
Laslty, power usage. The overall PSU load for 8800Ultra was 303W, with the Radeon HD 3870 X2 hitting 334W. That's pretty damn good when you remember that the 3870 X2 is two cards in one.
It's interesting to see AMD come out with with a majorly powerful video card after NVIDIAs domination of the market in 2007, but there are a few problems. The 8800Ultra was released in May of last year, and AMD have only just now managed to convincingly beat it. On top of that they had to use a card with 2 GPUs in it. Couple that with the fact that NVIDIA are on track to release the 9 series in February and this card might not look so impressive in a few months. Only time will tell.
You can take a gander at all of the results here, but just remember that all of it is in Chinese.

Oh no. I just got a new Nvidia Card... oh ass.
I'm really not interested in AMD's cards anymore. Nvidia are on top of the market, and it's taken AMD nearly a year to beat it, with Nvidia's brand new card weeks away from shipping.
This doesn't even matter, because Nvidia always has something up their sleeves to kick AMD in the nuts. 8800 Ultra was released in May last year, it took AMD almost a year to come up with something better...pfft come off it..
AMD ATI are on the arse. Developing a card to combat somthing that was realsed in may? 9 series may be the fianl blow.
They beat a card released in May with a Dual GPU card? Is that really beating it? All Nvidia has to do is release a dual GPU 8800 and completely crush AMD. If AMD wants to compete, stop trying beat Nvidia and start trying to just come close but offer the cards at a better price. Release a card that does 80% of what the 8800 can do but cost half as much and I'll buy it.
ATI really needs to step up their game. Their budget HD 38-series are already in danger of being rendered obsolete by the onset of the 8800GS. It's not only cheaper, but it offers better performance to boot. This card [3870] could have helped turn the tide if it replaced the 2900XT sooner, but with the 9800GX2 set to arrive in a few months, this victory will be shortlived.
If this ends up being cheaper than the 8800 Ultra, however, there may be a market for it.
poor amd, their processors are beaten by intel and their video cards are squashed by nvidia lol
wel, you have to admit, this card has been around for a while, they just havent dont anything with it yet
Ughhh. The lack of competition from ATi has kept the lineup from NVIDIA pretty much at the starting prices for months. I'll still probably go NVIDIA when I upgrade, but come on, at least drive their profits down a bit.
