A lot of people enjoyed Crackdown for its free-form sandbox-style gameplay, massive city environment and awesome visuals (Chris enjoyed it by giving the game an 8.8 out of 10); so much that Crackdown ended up selling over 1.5 million copies six months after its release. But hope for a sequel has been stagnant especially since it has been quite a few months without a peep.
Over on Wired's blog Game | Life, Shane Kim, vice president of Microsoft Game Studios, revealed some more details on why Microsoft remained mum about Crackdown 2. Simply put, Microsoft is thinking of producing the sequel but series developer Realtime Worlds may not return.
Kim elaborated that Microsoft owns the Crackdown intellectual property, but Realtime Worlds is "pursuing a different path from a company perspective." So we'll more than likely see Crackdown 2 in the future, but from a different developer.
The only in-development title Realtime Worlds revealed is APB (All Points Bulletin), an upcoming MMO, sandbox-styled game using the Unreal Engine 3 for Xbox 360 and PC. Considering Realtime Worlds hit a home-run with Crackdown and the company's founder David Jones created the original Grand Theft Auto, APB seems to be GTA or Crackdown but in an online world. Hey, that sounds awesome to me!

If the sequel does get done I hope they have more car options, cars that are similar to say the Batmobile, instead of cop cars and cars you can 'steal', real super-hero style cars since you are kinda playing a super-hero. That'd be cool
The Agency Supercar was like the Batmobile in the first Batman movie once you got 4 star driving. It looked different, yeah, but it had nitrous (jet engine) and machine guns, and was nearly indestructable.
I'll be looking forward to Crackdown 2, just add a bit more than orb hunting and killing gang bosses. The races were nice, but not enough. There could have been loads of content, given the size of the city, but they phoned in the sidequests :(
