madden08Electronic Arts announced today they've secured an extension to its NFL license, which covers teams, stadiums and players, till the end of the 2012 season. The new contract's financial terms were not disclosed and EA renewed the license, which was originally set up back in December 2004.

EA noted the continued success of its Madden franchise (generated more than $2 billion in retail sales) and the company mentioned that the 20th anniversary is approaching soon. Many people enjoyed Madden NFL 08 (GamerNode awarded a 9.0 out of 10 for the game) and over 1.8 million copies of the game were sold during its first week in retail, so apparently EA is doing something right.

EA also noted of the two spinoffs NFL arcade titles the company released too, including NFL Head Coach and the hilariously mediocre NFL Tour.

Newly elected EA Sports president, Peter Moore, said, "We are excited about the opportunity to extend and expand our relationships with the NFL and NFL Players. For nearly two decades, EA Sports has been bringing sports fans closer to the great game of football through the breakthrough interactive experiences of our video games. Game quality is our top priority, and we're committed to pushing our gameplay innovation, connecting football fans via rich online experiences and delivering the most visually stunning sports games on the market."

Noooo! Just when I was kind of starting to like EA too. After all this talk of making mistakes by monopolizing, you'd think EA would give other developers a chance to compete using the NFL license. Apparently not.

*Developer arrives at work to start on Madden NFL 2009*
*Replace all: "2008"with "2009"*
"Wooh, that was hard work"

Why not use that green to beef up your dev. team for the next madden? Or save your brilliant Chicago studio? Man up, EA.( Shows how little I know about the financial side of the industry.)
