Electronic Arts and Maxis announced today that the highly anticipated evolution sim, Spore, finally has an official release date. According to the press release, the game will "be available at retailers worldwide the weekend of September 7" for the PC, Mac, Nintendo DS, and mobile phones.
Said Spore's lead designer and creator, Will Wright:
"The wait is almost over. We're in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore, and the team at Maxis can't wait to see the cosmos of content created by the community later this year."
Neither can I. Spore looks to be a phenomenal virtual experience, and one of the best 2008 has to offer. I can't wait.
[EDIT] Thanks to GN reader vincian, I searched around and found the following snippet in a July 10th, 2007 interview with IGN:
IGN: Are you planning on putting out some kind of demo or beta program?
Patrick Buechner: We are going to release the creature editor portion of Spore in advance of the core game release. Probably several weeks before. We know there are a lot of people anticipating Spore and we appreciate their patience. We really want to give them the game that they're waiting for.
So it seems we'll get a taste of what it's like to play with Spore's tools a bit earlier than the official release date. Wooooo!!!

Hooray! No more delays!
I've heard that they will release the creature editor for a free download before they release the game.
Yes, I looked into it and appended what I found to the story. Thanks, vincian!
yay!
I can't help but treat this with a pinch of salt.
