Cataclysmic despair! At one of Microsoft's show floor booths at GDC an Xbox 360 console actually just got the red ring of death. Short of Bill Gates coming down from on high to say the "PS3 rules," I can't imagine a more embarrassing circumstance for Microsoft.
MS has been touting for a while now that the failure rate of 360s is not nearly as bad as the hype. A gaming sensus company just broke the news to the world that the failure rate probably is as bad as all that. Somewhere around 16 percent.
Despite that though, MS kept singing their tune, until today, when one of their machines died on the show floor. Even when MS had a chance to get brand new machines out there and to hand pick what they wanted, they still couldn't keep the damned things operational for a few days.
The Xbox 360 is a phenomenal product, but when stuff like this happens, I can't imagine it's very reassuring to prospective buyers.

The image for the article fits very nicely.
Now we know even microsoft gets pwnt by the R-RoD.
I still think 16% is too low. I'm going to bet 30%. Maybe 16% brick after a few weeks, but after a few months, that # must go up. 4 out of 5 of my friends has had one go.
rofl ouch.
Well, 16% is an improvement over 30%, no? http://www.gamernode.com/news/5673-insider-info-on-xbox-360-failures/index.html
haha
LMFAO..........It's time for the Xbox 720 already and put the 360 out of it's misery already.
What are you talking about jedi? I dont have a 360, so dont call me a fanboi, but this system is flourishing, even with the RROD going-ons. If you want to kill a console, do the ps3, it neds a fresh start, not new HDD.
lskennedy, the PS3 sold more units than the xbox 360 if u take both of their first 14 months and put them next to each other.
That's according to sources like VGChartz, though. I haven't seen any official numbers from the NPD on that yet. (At least for worldwide sales.)
Yeah, you shouldn't put too much stock into what they say at VG Chartz. Right now for instance their info for DMC4 says the game has sold around 1M across all platforms when Capcom themselves came out saying they've sold 2M. I helped out on an interview with those guys a while back when they were starting up, and they don't exactly conduct what we would call exhaustive research to ensure accuracy of their numbers.
This has got to be the RRoD heard around the world. So much for Microsoft claiming that RRoD incidents are widely overblown. lol.
