Last week we reported a rumor that the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on player might be going for sale for only $50--an attempt by Microsoft to unload the obsolete technology in light of Blu-ray's victory in the high definition DVD wars.
Apparently the rumors have proven correct as various websites are reporting that Microsoft has made it official and is cutting the price of the Xbox 360 HD DVD player from $129.99 to $49.99.
According to the stories, the new price is effective immediately. Amazon.com quickly sold out its allotment of the units early this morning while K-mart made the units available at the new price even earlier on its website this past Sunday.
With the demise of the HD DVD player from the 360's roster, many have speculated that Microsoft has a Blu-ray player in the works to replace the failed HD DVD player. To date, Microsoft has remained coy about the matter and has neither confirmed nor denied their plans for a new hi-def player.

It would be smart for them to make one. Make the BR tech available, and what reason would a potential consumer have to get a PS3 over a 360?
Of course, the PS3 has it built in and won't cost an arm and a leg, but still...
To buy, or not to buy?
Oh wait, it's in dollars, must be american only?
Well the Aussie HD-DVD addon price went down to $129.99 at the same time as the first US price drop, so hopefully we will see similar insanely low prices down under.
Just rang EB and they confirmed the Australian price is $49.95 AUD =D Gonna pick one up during lunch.
Holy poo!! thats great!!
Another great thing about this pack is you get the larger Universal Media Remote for the 360 in it. So you get a HD-DVD player that works with your 360, Windows XP and Windows Vista, a free copy of King Kong in HD and a 360 Universal Media Remote. FOR $50!!
Yay, I can get my very own Street Fighter Fireball Blocker for $50!
Actually, I'll just pass on this piece of crap, but thanks anyway MS.
Just to mention, an ad on XBL has stated that buying an HD-DVD player gets you 5 free movies by mail. Granted, they were running that at the $129.99 price point, don't know if it's valid at this price.
