To prime everyone up for the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Konami is releasing the Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection for the PS2. The collection will include the director's cuts of both MGS2 and MGS3. But perhaps the most interesting part of the bundle was that it included the original MGS (PS1). Naturally, many assumed that it was a ported version that was playable on the PS2.
Well, that speculation proved incorrect, as Konami PR has now informed Game Almighty that it will not be on PS2 discs, but rather, pressed on original PS1 discs. Why is this significant? Well, I can't speak for all the other countless millions of MGS fans, but for me the only real reason for buying this package would be an upgrade for the original MGS to a more current console. If that isn't included in the package, then there really isn't anything to separate these games from the retail versions already out on the street.
A quick look at Gamestop.com shows that you can get all three games in the package for around half the price of MGS Essential Collection which is set to retail for $29.99 USD. I'm just wondering why anyone would want to buy this.
EDITOR'S NOTE: The Metal Gear Solid 1 will use PlayStation 2 memory cards to save players' progress, so you don't have to go digging around to find a PS1 card, but is that enough?

Because there are plenty of people who never got into MGS before, having missed the PSX title.
@brendon
me
I'm remembering the reinvisioned version of MGS made for Gamecube by Silicon Knights, which already upgraded it to a "new" console. The least they might have done is include a PS2 port of that, which I am sure wouldn't have been so hard to do... But then, the price would have been higher, most likely... Never got much into the games, myself. I have MGS2, but after the great, but crazy-long cut-scenes only to die over and over again with that goofy stealth system and hardly any fighting ability if caught, uh, I haven't been back to it... That's been like 3 years ago now. Maybe I'd feel differently playing it now, who knows?
You're not supposed to fight if caught, you're supposed to run and hide. The only times you're supposed to stand and fight, instead of sneak around, are boss fights and a few sequences, like the final push inside of Arsenal at the end of MGS2.
And I'll probably pick this package up anyway, as I was only able to get a used copy of MGS1 and MGS2: Substance, (manual, but no case for the latter) and never bothered shelling out more money for the expansion to (IMO sub-par) MGS3.

I say again, "A quick look at Gamestop.com shows that you can get all three games in the package for around half the price of MGS Essential Collection which is set to retail for $29.99 USD."
If you guys wouldn't take such a quick look you'd notice that the two director's cuts included in the 3 pack are $24.99 a piece, not $4.99 like the regular editions. Journalism at it's finest.
