Maybe Sony was onto something, after all, when it decided to put the Blu-ray player inside the PS3. 50GB of storage space on one disc is nothing to sneeze at and many thought that the full capacity wouldn't be utilized by a video game for some time to come.
But Hideo Kojima, creative genius behind the MGS series, has not only reached the capacity of 50GB for Metal Gear Solid 4, but has actually surpassed that threshold.
Truth be known, Kojima explained that some improtant MGS4 elements and features had to be compressed down in order to fit on a Blu-ray disc. He complained that MGS4 could have been an even better game if the dev team had more room to work with.
This is quite astounding considering 50GBs is quite a large amount of storage space for a video game. Considering that the blu-ray storage barrier has been broken by MGS4, it looks like the well touted feature of superior storage space has been short-lived.
We can only imagine how much more media space heavyweight games will require in the future. Get ready for dual and quad layer Blu-ray machines.

Only Kojima would be that big of a whiner about having to compress audio/video for a game, which has been done for decades now.
Seems to me that rather than complain about lack of space, someone should spend more time optimizing code. Or maybe take out a cut scene or two. ;^)
I'd hate to think about how long the installation for this game is going to take..."Are you done with installing MGS4 yet?" "Almost mom, I'll be done...by my next birthday...."
Nah, there won't be any installing the game, I hope, after the DMC4 thing. Kojima's way to smart. But, you can never know how geniuses think.
Here's a idea, why don't we just use 2 (yes, that's right, two)blu-ray discs instead?!?
I agree w/ Brendon....
Yeah, even the latest movies released on Blue Ray DVDs have to compress the audio... Compression isn't necessarily a bad thing, when it's mild enough that it won't be detected by the human ear anyway. Video, the same. There are codecs now especially that render HD video near the same as uncompressed. Uncompressed HD video at 1080p is something like more than 1 GB, up to 2, or more, per minute, and that's just not possible to shell out in movies, games, any storage media to play commercial media...
So, yeah, this is a bit foolish. As someone on another board said, it seems more like a big PR thing for Sony than anything for artistic reasons. "Oh look! PS3's so baddass, it's already got games that can't even fit into a 50 GB Blue Ray disc!" Bah, whatever...
I have an idea. Use another disk and include metal gear solid 1-3 with the rest of the space.
