No in-game ads for SC2 or Battlefield Heroes

starcraft2Gamers were in an uproar recently when Activision CEO Robert Kotick made comments suggesting that StarCraft II may contain in-game advertising. Thankfully, Blizzplanet received a follow-up statement from Blizzard stating that there are no such plans, yay!

The statement said, "We have no plans to have in-game advertising in StarCraft II. We believe Bobby was actually referring to Battle.net, which has always included ads." So there we go folks, no Mountain Dew or Red Bull ads during your midnight Zerg rushes.

In somewhat related news, Shacknews confirmed that Battlefield Heroes, EA's upcoming free to play shooter, won't contain in-game advertising either, despite early initial reports. Instead, advertisements will be featured on the game's official website, which you have to visit before launching the game. Also advertisements will be displayed during loading screens and the registration page.

Any fans of in-game advertising here? I know that many are opposing in-game ads but if the ads offered benefits to gamers, like lower game prices, then I think more gamers would tolerate them.

I know everyone normally whinges about it, but I have no problem at all with advertising in games. Almost every form of media, except video games, already has massive amounts of advertising in them and nobody seems to notice. Whack an ad in a game and the Internet explodes.

Its fine with me if it doesn't take away from the atmosphere of the game. BF2142 is a great example: it had ads, but they were mad to look old and had snow on them (on snowy levels of course) so they blended well with the enviroment. In fact, they added to it. I only have a problem with them if they stand out so much that the atmosphere was lost. Like, if they looked brain new despite everything else around them being old (a futuristic old lol)

As long as it made sense, I wouldn't mind.

I actually like (appropriate) in-game advertising. Don't try and sell me a Cadillac in the middle of a medieval castle and don't give me luminescent-bright McDonald's ads in a dank and dreary corridor filled with demons. Hearing that there won't be in-game advertising in BF Heroes is actually a little bit of a let down, given the success of the ones in BF 2142.
