The NPD Group has released a new study today that shows some seemingly rather bizarre results. Among other things, the study shows that young males who are classified in the "hardcore gamer" demographic, are less likely to buy a videogame than other types of media.
The CD and DVD industries, despite taking a hit overall, are still more popular with hardcore gamers than ever. "We have this perception of hard-core gamers glued to their consoles, and immersed in virtual worlds," said entertainment industry analyst Russell Crupnick. "When in fact, they are still spending a lot of time with, and money on, music, movies, and other pastimes."
This is one of those things, that sounds strange at first, but when you actually think about it, is perfectly logical. How much does a videogame cost? $60. How much does an album cost on itunes? About $10. Boom. There's your answer. It's like acting bewildered upon finding out that caviar enthusiasts eat more sandwiches than caviar. It's not amazing, it's just cheaper and more readily available.
For those curious, the NPD defined a hardcore gamer as someone who plays games daily, or for prolonged periods of time. I just hope they're not lumping us into the same category as the Bejewled crowd.

Props for the caviar reference.
Yeah, I think I might spend more money on all my pastimes (surfing, partying with friends, NFL network, this high speed internet connection, weekends with my girl) but as far as music and movies go, my videogame budget dwarves my music and movies budget. Bigtime.
Oh yeah, and sweet pic. "for the king!"
I do spend more money on DVDs and watch more movies than play games, but I've always considered myself a bigger movie fanatic than game fanatic. Not to say I don't love both, but if it came down to "Pick one and you'll never have the other again" I'd have to give the nod to movies.
But buy CDs? Who still buys CDs! Haha!
(Don't sue me!)
I'm a sucker for DVDs
I think the point is, 'Hardcore gamers' are actually hugely into entertainment, in all forms. That is what they like to spend their money on. Whether that entertainment is gamers, music or movies, it's not hugely important.
Exactly, Kester. We don't just game to the exclusion of everything else. I know that I myself will often pick up a CD or two or maybe a DVD (well, Blu-Ray now) when I grab a game. CDs also help in gaming, since you can play them while gaming. :D
I haven't bought a DVD in years, and I haven't bought a CD in...more years.
The last DVD I bought was Troy...in 2004.
yeah, who the hell buys CD's? My parents don't even buy CD's anymore they're all about the iTunes. CD's are as dead of a format as the 8 track.
Why the hell would you buy Troy? For that matter why would you even what that codswallop more than once?!
