Konami president Fumiaki Tanaka certainly expects big things from Metal Gear Solid 4. The game is due to arrive on the PlayStation 3 this summer, and Mr. Tanaka is expecting lots of sales, even though the PS3 install base is relatively small compared to the other current-gen consoles.
When asked if he was concerned about this issue, he responded with the assertion that gamers are simply not buying the PS3 because Metal Gear Solid 4 hasn't been released yet. He takes it one step further, saying that even other publishers aren't producing games like they will in the post-MGS4 world. How's that for confidence in your product? He said:
"Now, potential users are going, 'When that game comes out, I want to get a PS3,' and they're waiting for that title to come out. When MGS4 comes out, other companies will put out their big PS3 titles out, and then gradually won't the install number grow?"
The funny thing about Mr. Tanaka's statement is that I know a handful of potential PS3 owners (including myself) who have expresed that very sentiment. So could MGS4 be the system-selling "killer app" that the PS3 is waiting for? What do you think?

I think Tanaka might be overestimating MGS4 slightly, I doubt it'll motivate other developers to that degree. I agree that it'll be a system seller though, I plan on getting a PS3 for it, there'll be enough good games to make the system worth it then, IMO.
it5 made me think of getting a PS3 and then i thought about it for a second and said, fuck no!
It will be a system seller to a degree, but I don't think it's going to inspire other companies.
I got a ps3 for mgs4...
The ps3 isn't even expensive anymore.
$400 is still a big chunk of change Aaron. And that's for the 40 gig, I wouldn't touch that model with a 10 foot pole, I want BC :(
PS3 is a good value even when you only consider the awesome direction they're taking PSN games. They're amazing and original whereas XBLA seems to only want to regurgitate old games with new graphics. PSN games were a big chunk of the reason why I got a PS3, amazing stuff like MGS4 is like the world's best icing on the cake.
Now that i think of it actually, the game i was most excited abotu for the 360 lunch was Geometry Wars: RE...hmmm
I've played metal gear since it's Nintendo days, so it was part of the reason I picked up a PS3. Tanaka's statement would be fully believable if he said "coupled with little big planet, and the fact you get a blue ray player for your new hd tv, MGS4 will make a huge impact on the market in the next 6 months." Leave the crazy talk to Jack Tompson, mr. Tanaka.
And on the BC issue, what do you do with your old systems, people? Eat them? You do know they still make and sell ps2's and controllers.
