Nowadays, the term MMORPG goes hand in hand with one juggernaut: World of Warcraft. While the MMORPG has generated plenty of funds not only for Blizzard Entertainment but for the PC platform itself, Sony may be planning an ace up its sleeve regarding the MMO potential for the PlayStation 3.
According to comments made by Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley, he suggested that the PS3 can host an MMO that can rival the popularity of World of Warcraft but the key word is when?
When asked the question on if a MMO on consoles can do any damage to WoW, Smedley said:
"I absolutely do [think we'll see that], and in fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you've already got an online userbase. It's a massive advantage over the PC and we don't have to worry about graphics cards or things like that. It's going to be very big. Console online gaming in general I think is going to be one of the next huge phases of growth in the online gaming space."
Things like the constant patches, the required hard drive to store said patches and the subscription fee are a few reasons why online gaming on consoles haven't really taken off, especially with the current-line of consoles. Considering all the routine updates WoW goes through, can a PS3 MMO handle the barrage?

Not a chance. You can use a cheap arse piece of crap PC to run WoW, much cheaper than buying a PS3 and a decent TV to play it on.
MMOs? Yawn.
Have they even got 32 players in fps games yet??
lol mmorpg is for pc and will stays so :p
and yea wow can run on basically anything.... though just to point it out, guild wars runs on about same specs as wow but still gives better graphics and framerate :p so theer is more to push out of wow.... Sony can forget about this
NO
not happening. mmo's cannot work on consoles period. think of all the button macros and hotkeys it takes to manage an mmo alone. and don't get started with "but you could just use a mouse and/or keyboard for the console!" think about that. it would be the same as running a PC, except of lesser quality
mmo is for people that like to waste money...I might try wow one day if they ever took the monthly fees off (which won't happen so i guess i'll never play it). Few things bother me more than having the nerve to charge monthly fees to play your game. I understand they have to keep their servers going, but i don't care, I'm not paying.
