Fracture will push the PS3 and 360 to the limits

Category: Industry, Posted: 03/20/2008 at 02:10PM CDT by Frank Ling, Editorial Director

fractureLucasArts believes that its new game, Fracture, will push the hardware of the Xbox 360 and the PS3 to their limits.

Now that's a pretty tall order for any game company to claim, especially in the case of the PS3, which most people agree has only seen about 15 to 20 percent of its full potential utilized.

However LucasArts feels extremely confident about the game and said, "While a lot of games are pushing the limits of what can be done visually in games, we also wanted to push gameplay to levels that literally could not be done on the previous generation of hardware.

"To put it simply, Fracture is one of the few games that really takes advantage of all of the processing power of the new consoles."

To put it simply, as LucasArts puts it, we've heard this sort of hype before from other game developers only to be disappointed by the final product. So we'll just have to wait and see for ourselves once the game is released to see just how much they've "pushed" the hardware of the 360 and PS3. And of course, in spite of the game "pushing" the limits, we hope it will be fun too.

The game Fracture is set in the year 2161 where genetically altered mutants duke it out with all manner of weapons that can blow up the surrounding terrain (and living things) to smithereens. The game will have plenty of explosions and particle effects so stay tuned for Fracture. Fracture will be released in July of 2008.

Massive real-time terrain deformation? Really, can't say I've seen that messed with too awful much, at least, not on the scale this game is promising. I wasn't overly impressed with what I saw in the earlier trailers, but that was a long time ago. Things change quickly. This game is on my watch list despite that, though.

Each console has their unique selling point. However, if this game is pushing both consoles to the "limits" of their hardware, about 6 months after the release of this game is the point where PCs are going to start coming out on top again with affordable hardware.

I spent a lot of time in mercenaries driving from town to town reducing every one to rubble. The ability to turn a town into a crater instead, the land fill that with the vehicles that used to adorn the streets has me interested.

NPC#1 "you're late for work dear."

NPC#2 " I can't go to work. Metro city is just a smoking hole. And besides, some nutbag just drove our family car into that smoking crater."
