SEGA ON has put up the first gameplay clip of the upcoming Sonic game, Sonic Unleashed. The umpteenth Sonic game since the series began a drastic downward spiral, Sega and Co. are hoping this new one can right the ship and bring everyone's favorite anti establishment anthropomorphic hedgehog back to mainstream relevance. If this short montage is any indication, I think it very well may. Let's just say this might be the first Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 1 that wasn't good purely because it didn't 100% butcher the name.

Hmm... I still hold fast to the belief that once Sonic went 3D, he was shot in the face and thrown into an unmarked grave. It sure looks nice, but so did Sonic the Hedgehog (X360) - the nightmares will never stop...
You tried to embed the flash there, didn't you Jon?
If SEGA takes the Capcom route (2.5D) then there may be some hope for this game. So far there is no Tails or Amy in sight and that's always a good thing.
The reason sonic was fun for me was 2 fold.
1. It came with the sega genesis.
2. It made super mario bros. seem like I was playing in syrup.
Since then, games have gotten better. A lot better. Both reasons are old and defunct to me now. Just like sonic.
May have.
As long as they stick with running and ring grabbing, and leave out the yiffing, it should be good.
I think it will still suck. Sonic is no longer relevant to modern game design.
I dont get it. Its sonic, whoop dee do. You just hold forward the whole time and jump once in while...
I'm gonna have to agree with Requiem. The originals were cool for their time, but since moving to 3D it's been a long, hard fall.
Well, I have hope for the blue hedgehog. If the game ends up being what it looks like it's going to be (i.e. 3d world, 2D movement), then all will be fine.
Of course, I sense that somewhere, there will be interference...
Uh, Mario games still not only are seen as great, but dominate. Saying that Sonic has had it's time and is over is foolish. They make a fun game with the character and market it well, it will do well. It hasn't "had its day." *rolls eyes*I am sure there were people saying that throughout the DECADES of Micky and Bugs Bunny, etc., etc...
It's what others have said. The core gameplay of Sonic, which made Sonic, well, Sonic, is impossibly difficult to transition to 3D... that being said, Archem is right. A 3D side view may be the change needed.
However, if this tanks... Sonic will forever be relying on handouts from Mario.
I think every gameplay style is relevant and still has its place. Just because consoles are capable of 'more' doesn't mean that it always needs to be implemented that way. Calling any gameplay style "irrelevant" really stings my ears to hear. Maybe it's the inner child who still finds simple gameplay engaging and fun when its done well/
What's "relevant?" If what's relevant is what is popular, then all that we really need is another MMO and an FPS to match. God forbid something different be done.
Maybe I'm alone in thinking this. I'm not saying that the game will be good, but I'm not going to dismiss it outright. Sega can still develop a good game. They've just had trouble finding a good fit the ol' hedgehog in these new eras. Maybe a refreshing blast of old-school is exactly what it needs.
My case in point- some friends and I were playing some 360 the other night. After a brief outing of Portal, some messing around in Call of Duty, and one or two hours of Dead Rising, I loaded up n+ on a whim, not thinking they'd enjoy it too much, but we ended up playing for 6 hours solid, well past 3am. Too bad we were offline, it didn't record the insane time-left we racked up :-( I also got to watch an addiction form in my buddy as he threw himself at mines and monsters over and over, DEAD SET on beating whatever task was at hand.
Never dismiss the power of simplicity in game design.
i dont know about the rest of you, but i enjoyed SAB2 for the cube, it was a damn fun game, and imo, the gameplay wasn't broken, shit, it was just SA1 with different stages, same lame voiceovers, and solid gameplay. this game though, idk, the trailer was weird....
Looks good, and would be nice to see SEGA come back with a smash hit Sonic game. If Nintendo can do it with Mario (Galaxy), then what's stopping SEGA from doing it with Unleashed?
Sega makes crappy games like the one for the 360, where they try to hard to incorporate a story. oh and shadow the hedgehog too, great game right?
The modifier "to me" indicates it is an opinion. Fine. If you want to play a mascot game with 'tude (was a big selling point and the reason sonic was introduced at the time.) ok, your cup of tea. Heck, I LOVE fighting games. I know they are about dead at this stage in the game (that is why so few are released. Part of the reason EA canned the new marvel one.). But when released, if they are good, I'll pick them up. Wow, I can feel the hate in the room.
