Pro Tip: Super Smash Bros.

Category: Features, Posted: 04/03/2008 at 08:58PM CDT by Creighton DeSimone, Staff Writer

Welcome to the evening edition of Pro Tip, a weekly feature where I pull a game off my shelf and try to pass along a quick and helpfull tip. This week I'm mixing it up a little. Instead of focusing on one game, I am taking things broad brush. I'm looking at Super Smash Bros. as a franchise

The concept behind Super Smash Bros., or SSB as we call it in my house, is to take all of the gaming legends and pit them against one another in an all out winner take all... er.. brawl. Luckily, when it comes to gaming legends, Nintendo has the market cornered.

The game itself probably comes from two guys geeking out about who would win in a fight, Mario or Link. From there they decided to create a game that, as the Nintendo manifest dictates, has come out on every console since it's inception

I don't know why I'm explaining this game. If you're reading this site you already know all about it, so on with the tip.

Pro Tip: If you value your sanity, don't let your friends play as Pikachu.

It's a pretty strait forward tip. Don't. Let. Them!

I don't know how the little yellow rat played in the first Smash Bros. game, as I did not have a N64, but I can tell you that in the newest title, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he's a little cheap. The lightning that is harnessed from the sky is infuriating. And certain people named Bryan use it to get under your skin. It is everywhere all the time.

And don't think that being on the ground will keep you safe. He can toss lightning better than Zeus ever could. It skips along the ground until it hits you and he can keep cranking out lightning for eternity. He's like the energizer bunny in that respect.

On top of that he's the only character playing mind games with you the whole time. Every time he attacks he repeats his name. PI-KA-CHU! Over and over and over. Until you want to kill yourself. Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

In short, I recommend two things. 1) Don't be a jerk by playing as Pikachu. 2) If your friend plays as Pikachu don't ever invite him over again.

Oh, and that whole Mario vs Link thing, I think we all know Link would win hands down.

Samus would destroy both Mario and Link!

No, don't let people play as pit!!!

The fight is on!! :(

that damn spinning blade that pt does is soo annoying, and the pikachu thing is for sure a true, omg get out i hate you a know?

metaknight's tornado thing is easily the most annoying thing in the game. i don't think pikachu's that rigged if you're decent at dodging. he was the cheapest in the n64 one by far though.

But... I like Pikachu... T_T

Pit and Meta Knight will haunt my dreams forevermore... Pikachu's nothing to worry about if you're any good.

I found Ike to neutralize the cheep fighters like pikachu, and meta knight. He's stupidly strong and not as slow as bowser or DK.

Wario is the greatest.

But yeah, Pit's spiny blade thing is the cheapest of the cheap. Also, he's harder to ringout than Kirby.

I love it when I play pikachu, and while my 3 other friends are fighting each other on ground level, i jump really high and do a moving lightning strike from above and get all 3 of them. :)

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that playing Pikachu was some how cheapening the fighting going on in Smash Bros. Last I checked you could pick any character you want, and those who are smart enough to realize Pikachu has some great advantages over other characters will pick him every time. Sure he is annoying, but at least he's not a fairy like Link (i mean that literally, by the way).

Also, when my 6 year old son (I don't have a son, but its better for the story) was playing the game the other day as Samus, he walked out of the room when Samus turned into a girl saying "I was a girl? Tell me when you're done killing me."

Kirby = the best, as long as you don't start to tell your moves you'll always win in a brawl with 3-4 people. Also, duels are a cinch, just keep an opponent chasing you until overtime and use a jumping hammer to the face when overtimes pops up.

I would hate playing against you bigspfan.

Or learn how to counter it ;)

If you let pika's down b lighting hit you, its got some nasty knockback, but its still pretty easy to dodge.

The only thing that I haven't been able to dodge is Super Sonic. Whenever my bro opens up a Smash ball with sonic, I know I just lost a life.

Sorry for the double post, accidentally submitted it....

Anyway, I have found every character is really well balanced. Heavy characters can hang with the speedier ones, unlike in melee. Which is great for me, since my favorite and best character is Bowser. Assuming you play by tourney rules (neutral stages, no items) it really boils down to skill. Items are fun, but I had to turn off Super Spicy Curry and the timer cause they were just so cheap. (Curry is evil I'm telling you). Though the FS and Dragoon are too, except they are so awesome they get to stay on.

Man I love this game. The best, definitely.
