Wideband is here at 50Mbps but at a premium price

internet speed meterNo matter what high-speed Internet service you use, there is always the wish for even higher broadband speeds. Comcast says that your wish is their command...for a stiff price of $149.99 per month, that is. The DOCSIS 3.0 protocol is promising download speeds of 50Mbps and uploads at 5Mbps.

To put this all in perspective, a typical "fast" download speed is around 3Mbps. Compared to the 50Mbps that Comcast is offering, you'll probably need to install a radiator on your modem to keep it cool.

The new service is a move from broadband to wideband. Mitch Bowling of Comcast said, "We believe wideband will usher-in a new era of speed and Internet innovation for today's digital consumers. Wideband is the future, and it's coming fast."

Will the blazing speed conection ever be more affordable for your everyday Joe? Comcast spokesman, Charlie Douglas said, "It's too early to talk about future price drops. A lot of this is going to be about consumer demand and the response that we see. We'll adjust based on consumer demand."

In reality, the demand is there, it just depends on how many consumers would actually sign up for such an expensive service. If the accounts don't materialize as Comcast hopes, that will most likely usher in the price drops that Comcast is being so cagey about.

Hmm... wait till 100 is out, as past that point it won't matter for some computers, like probably mine.

Meh, in the UK you're lucky to get 8, don't hold your breath aaron.

I'm on 1.5Mbps... for $100... in Australia. I remember in Hong Kong, the speed was great, the price was cheap, and life was good. /cry

Is that unlimited Galaxy?

I'm on ADSL2+ which gives me 1 - 1.5 MB/sec speeds with a 40GB cap per month.

Posted by jambo on 04/05/2008 at 01:00AM

And I forgot to say it's only like $60 a month

Where I live 54.95/mo gets me 10mbps down and 1.5mbps up. This is only going to be nice for those who download religiously and are willing to spend the money to go to the next level. For your typical gamer this will do nothing for them.

I have a 8MB connection with BT thats unlimited. But my router is piss poor and always fucks up. When my router works, its a dream.

My neighbors are on 6mbps and my other neighbors are on 4mbps, both don't care that someone's using their internet (one of the neighbor's kids goes to the same skool as me and they will make sure I get access as long as they have bandwidth left) if I bridge the connections I could easily get 10mbps for a very affordable price of 0$ per month B-)

Well here in america, you pay your monthly thing, and there is no cap, im on a 5 meg for 39.95 i think, so yeah.

lskennedy - Some cable providers DO put a cap on your monthly downloads. DSL never does, however.

As to this... I doubt anyone will go anywhere near that speed, especially during peak hours.

I get about 10Mbps, and I'm quite content with it.

It's only twice as fast as my line, which is a 24Mbps, giving me download speeds of anywhere between 2-3 MB/s. That costs me a cool £20 a month, totally unrestricted.

You should totally host a CS server, and make money from it.

Screw Comcast. I pay $30 for 15Mbs down and 2Mbs up. I'm continually able to hit that download speed. For $10 more I can double my bandwidth and go to 30Mbs down and 5Mbs up. I have Optimum Online (aka Cablevision). I'd like to see tests on Comcasts new service to see if people can even hit 50Mbps or if that's just a theoretical limit.

@P-Thunder go check out http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ before buying a new router.
