If EA and Take-Two merge, will GTA4 be pushed back?

Category: Industry, Posted: 04/07/2008 at 02:27PM CDT by John Meyer, Staff Writer

Remember how EA tried to buy Take-Two? And then tried again and again? Well, on the latest episode of Bonus Round with Geoff Keighley, infamous industry analyst Michael Pachter talked about possible effects of EA purchasing Take-Two after their recently updated bid. According to him, if EA is successful in merging with the company (thereby forming some Super Publisher), it's very likely that EA will hold off on releasing Grand Theft Auto IV until later this year. Not only that, but they have an economic incentive to do so. Pachter believes that by delaying GTA4 all the way to the fourth quarter of the year (!!!), EA will make much more money on the title.

So why doesn't Take-Two just wait until later this year to release Grand Theft Auto IV if it's going to be far more profitable in the fourth quarter, then? Pachter further explained that Take-Two really needs to get the game out as soon as possible because their company desperately needs the money a title like GTA4 can provite instantly. "Take-Two, financially, has to get that game [GTA4] out ... they need the money [now]. They need to get it out," he said. I'd also say the gamers really need this game out as soon as possible. All I know is that I'll definitely be avoiding the internet for a few days if the game does indeed get delayed.

If that happened I'd hire some terrorists to go bomb ea's headquarters. I'd hire suicide bombers so i wouldn't actually have to pay too.

You're a sweetheart, bu11eT.

I wouldn't want to be EA if this did go ahead ( which I pray to the invisible friends in the sky that it doesn't). HELL, I wouldn't want to be EA FULL STOP.

pachter's comments aren't even relevant anymore since take two flat out denied ea's monopoly hungry ass

I half want it to be delayed. Just to see the response.

its not getting bought out by EA before the release date, it just isint going to happen, so stop worrying your asses. the only time T2 would sell to EA is after GTAIV initial release

...and its highly unlikley they would, even after

Garcian, that would have been an epic April Fool's. Rioting in the streets all 'round the world!

Really what does it matter :p

i thought the whole point of a hostile takeover was that they could go over t2's head... hence the whole "urging" of shareholders...

i'm not saying anything will or won't happen but some of the comments seem to indicate that all the power lies with t2 when in reality they don't have ALL of the power (but certainly an upper hand imo)...

I would have to help stage a marathon calling campaign to EA customer service. With a little help from the internet, and hard core GTA fans, we could tie up their phones till the 4th quarter. Or until they caved and released the game.

EA really wants Take Two. It's not like where yahoo shut down Microsoft and that was that.

Two things to consider-

Release is less than three weeks away. I would be incredibly shocked if the game hasn't already gone gold. I would be less shocked (read: not at all) to find out there's already warehouses holding on to production stock of this game. Shoot, look at the physical asset leaks coming forth already.

Canceling production, and/or sitting on production stock for 6 months seems ridiculous, and stupid, even for EA in a hypothetical situation.
