The Sega Racing Studio shuts down

Category: Industry, Posted: 04/09/2008 at 06:22PM CDT by Frank Ling, Editorial Director

sega rallyThe Sega Racing Studio, responsible for the game Sega Rally Revo, won't be finishing the race because Sega has made the decision to shut it down.

The studio, which was formed in 2005 in the UK, was hoping that its Rally Revo game would turn out to be a tremendous hit ,and thus warrant an extension of its existence as a game company for several more years.

Sega Rally Revo received moderately good reviews but didn't do well enough to justify a sequel of the game.

Sega officially said of the shutdown, "The decision is part of a review of SEGA's Western Development Studios to ensure that each studio is a profitable entity in its own right, and unfortunately the SEGA Racing Studio's 5 year plan would not result in a successful return for the SEGA business moving forward. SEGA would like to stress that there will be no changes within their other internal development studios."

Sega Rally Revo probably would have had a better chance if not for the the likes of the Gran Turismos, Forzas and Project Gotham Racing titles it had to compete against--which ultimately, proved to be too much for it to finish in the winner's circle.

You have to do something special to stand out with that much competition. SRR did not. Hope they spend more time on original IP's like condemned. I'm also interested in Golden Axe:beast rider. Free up those funds, Sega.
