We all know Gran Turismo 5: Prologue looks great. In fact it's one of the best looking titles to ever hit a console.
The full Gran Turismo 5, however, is looking to beat out even Prologue in the graphics department. The creator of the Gran Turismo series, Kazunori Yamauchi, says "in terms of quality we've been able to establish a benchmark in this version, but I think with GT5 there will be additional refinements, perhaps to the lighting and maybe the weather... weather effects."
Yamauchi says that it will be roughly a decade before games boast real-time graphics that look like the CG you see in the movies. He explains that "real-time computer graphics are about 10 years behind non-real-time computer graphics like you see in movies. I think that gap is what we'll be trying to fill in the years to come."
Video game graphics have certainly come a long way in these past ten years, though. Just a decade ago, we were marveling over Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Metal Gear Solid.
Now the graphics of these games are woefully outdated and sometimes even elicit laughter from the newer generation of gamers. Terms like high-definition, bump-mapping, specular lighting, and depth of field never existed back then. Now, in today's games, these are graphical features that are common-place and taken for granted.
It will certainly be interesting when current great looking games like Call of Duty 4 or Crysis are graphically criticized ten years from now.

see i think that the gaming industry will start moving away from using graphics as a benchmark for quality and start looking at areas like AI or physics engines.
what happened to gameplay.....
I don't laaugh at old games....I'm of to play some zelda.
Old games could not rely on graphics, so they had to be fun. [sigh] alot has changed in 10 years.
Well, off to play some Star Craft.
Old games, new games, both are fun. Why does everyone have to be a fag and say ''LOL IT HAS GOOD GRAPHIX SO IT MUST SUCK''? And I don't take this stuff for granted, I still love to see the bump map effects, they're totally rad.
I will stop and stare at walls in games. They are that pretty.
Graphics technology has just about peaked, IMO. There's not much better they need to look to cross that uncanny divide. WIthin 1-2 final generations, photorealistic realtime rendering will just about be as good as it can be, it all then relies on the memory at hand to utilize. It really does come down to other considerations for the future, as Falchion was saying. I agree with him 100%. Better AI, better world interaction and physics spells better gameplay in this new era.
'LOL IT HAS GOOD GRAPHIX SO IT MUST SUCK''?
That wasnt what i was saying, but some games, lair for instance, look great, play like shit.
