You can't go "Home" yet. Public beta delayed again

Category: PlayStation 3, Posted: 04/22/2008 at 02:18PM CDT by Frank Ling, Editorial Director

homeWhen Sony first announced the user interactive program "Home" for the PS3 there was an immediate buzz surrounding the new program.

It promised to offer users a virtual community where PS3 gamers could meet each other in a virtual world, interact with one another, have virtual apartments to live in, and live in a digital realm free of charge.

You can't go home just yet because the open beta for Home has been pushed back from Spring to the Fall of this year.

Kaz Hirai, president of SCEA said, "We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today."

Hirai emphasized the point that Sony would rather delay the open beta testing date rather than prematurely releasing it before it was ready for the general public to see.

"Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PlayStation Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation tradition."

So for now, Home is still brewing and being tweaked by Sony. It will be an interesting thing to see after all the hype that has surrounded the program.

This is becoming most annoying.

Agreed. How about this. Release home light in the meantime. All the features, without the cooky second life avatars. I don't need a "second life". My first one rocks.

Is anyone surprised by this at all? Doesn't Sony have a pretty strong history of over-promising, and then delaying, their releases?
