Daily Q: Which Mario Kart is the best?

Category: Features, Posted: 05/04/2008 at 04:08PM CDT by Eddie Inzauto, Senior Editor

GamerNodeToday's Daily Q is something I ask anyone who claims to be a Nintendo fan, because I find the answer varies quite a bit from person to person. Recently, Creighton and I actually got into a no-holds-barred cage match over this very topic (secretly, I want to see all of the GN faithful tear each other limb from limb inside of a chainlink DOME), so I pose the question to you:

"Which game is the best in the Mario Kart series...and why? Which is the worst?"

Yeah, I mixed it up there with the bonus question, but I know you guys can rock two at once. For me, Mario Kart DS is the best, and Double Dash is the worst.

Admittedly, I have had very little time with Mario Kart Wii, so my assessment may be unfair, but Mario Kart DS has tons of characters and karts to choose from, with a great range of attributes for each, as well as plenty of tracks, great sense of speed, and the first online play in the series. Double Dash feels like a slug race, and took the concept of weapon pick-ups to the realm of ridiculous imbalance. Handicapping was taken way too far, and in many cases, the game is simply obnoxious.

There's my take. How about you?

DS, it's the only one I've played to a real extent that's why, haven't played the others that much.

Gotta go with Super Mario Kart. It's the one I've played the most by far, and the one with which I have the fondest memories.
It's look doesn't hold up to the modern age, but damn if it ain't still fun.

Mario Kart Wii is best, and Mario Kart 64 is worst. For me of course. MKWii has the best course designs in the series and the online is spectacular. MK64 is just boring with boring course designs (ugh at its Rainbow Road) and boring graphics.

I havent played the new Mario Kart Wii, but it looks fun. Double Dash was really fun with a bunch of friends, but the best one IMO would probably be eitehr Super Mario Kart of Mario Kart 64, fun fun times.

super mario kart, mario kart 64 was the worst.

I've only played Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, and I'd probably vote for Mario Kart 64. Like Requiem said, those were fun times.

I have to say I am enjoying the Wii version quite a bit. However I think I liked Double Dash the best. The inclusion of special weapons really made choosing your character an important part of the game. Also DD was the first one on line not DS. The DS version is solid, don't get me wrong, but the strategy aspect on DD hooked me.

As for worst. I don't think any of the Mario Kart games are bad. But Super Mario Kart is the farthest thing from what we know as the franchise today. It was more focussed on the racing than the weapons.

The Mario Kart Wii selects some of the best tracks around, can be played online and you can play anywhere you go. Need I say more?

Truth be told, I haven't got one copy of MK for the Wii yet, so I can't evaluate it yet.

D'oh.... I meant Mario Kart DS on the first paragraph of my earlier message.

Mario Kart SNES, best of the series, hands down. Without a doubt the most challenging of the series, no blue shells, no rubberbanding, and if you were skilled enough you could time your "hops" to avoid incoming shells and those slippery bannanas. Then you throw in a kickass multiplayer, slit screen but who cares it still kicked ass, and now you have a winner of a game.

Worse in the series, meh none were really that bad. But, if I had to choose, I choose Double Dash. Damn you and the invention of the blue shell. Not to mention how bad the rubberbanding AI has gotten. Just take into the fact that you will NEVER lap another computer-based driver, no matter how well you drive, as a testement to how bad the rubberbanding has become.

Double Dash is my favorite, mainly because they really did something different with the series. Also, Peach/Daisy combo rocks mah socks.

MK: DD only had LAN play, unless you linked your Cube to your computer and shared the internet connection. Also, who honestly has a GC LAN adapter?

Mario Kart 64 was the best. My friends and I sunk many hours into that multiplayer and kept coming back because it was fun every time. I can easily go back and play that game now and still enjoy it.

As for worst, I was never able to get into Double Dash. I really wanted to like it, but for some reason I could not.

Mario Kart 64 was my favourite - it had the most difficult powerslide to master and a brilliant multiplayer. SUper Mario Kart (SNES) comes a close second - everything about it screams of the golden age that was the SNES, great graphics, awesome music and - again - great two player split screen.

MK:DD was awful, in my opinion. Too slow and very dull racing. Mario Kart Wii does nothing for me, as I said in another news post, it feels - to me at least - like a glorified version of Mario Kart DS, which I paid less for.

Havnt got a wii and havnt played mario kart wii or double dash.... so out of what i have played, mario kart ds

Posted by Archem on 05/05/2008 at 12:00AM

Hmm... Tough. It's either Double-Dash (love the two-per-kart mechanic and the epic levels) or DS (it has TWICE AS MANY TRACKS!!!). Although, I haven't played MKW yet, so that may change the line-up...

DS is my favorite.... I'd have to say 64 is the worst... As it was mentioned before... It was just plain boring... As for the rest, Super Mario Kart is a close Second. Double Dash/Wii for third...(They both feel the same to me... probably because of the controller) and let's not forget Super Circuit...

As for Mario Kart Wii... They did very good with this one... the online is great, finally got to try that today... But they really screwed up battle mode... Teams are the worst idea... It's nice as an option... Not the only choice... And it's designed for 12 players... And yet they still managed to make the battle stages too large... They should have stuck with 4 player battle mode... Online is not a good reason to try to expand anything... Most of Mario Kart's Appeal is sitting in the same room with someone, trash talking on Battle mode... And It's unplayable... same goes for Online Battle mode... Simply unplayable... Not enjoyable... I miss the SNES days... One on One, and you never got lost looking for each other...

Double dash or super circuit. Haven't played the Wii one yet though.

Posted by walkejad on 05/05/2008 at 09:28AM

I would have to say Mario Kart 64. It set the basis for all of the other 3D Mario Kart games. I also like Super Mario Kart because it was what started the whole series. I really don't care for Double Dash and I haven't played DS or Wii, but I will be getting the DS version soon.

Posted by Tankcommander on 05/05/2008 at 11:30AM

Double Dash is my favorite, but I haven't played the Wii version. I haven't played DS much, but I haven't been too impressed with it.

64 for me!

Posted by P-Thunder. on 05/05/2008 at 11:46AM
