Today, id Software announced they are working on the fourth entry in their highly successful Doom franchise as well as expanding its team of developers to work on the sequel to Doom 3.
"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead.
"It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."
No further details were revealed but the company will most likely utilize its new id Tech Engine 5 to produce the game. id Software's lead artist Kevin Cloud had the following to say:
"You don't even have to worry about how it's going to look on PS3 or 360. Right now we've got it running cross-platform running 60 hertz, and it looks really good. In terms of what artists are available to achieve--it's something you have to see for yourself. I can say this, but you still won't get it until you see it."
At first, you may be inclined to call it shenanigans but seeing as how ShackNews reported the story, I'd say this is quite real.

Nice, i haven't played Doom 3 though yet.
I haven't played any of the dooms yet.
BURN THE HERETIC
I love doom, this is very good news, but I bet it won't be as awe inspireing as when we first saw the doom 3 screen shots though...
I play doom 3 more than half-life
After the piece of sh*t that was DOOM 3, they had better do something extremely good if they want my money.
yeah, doom 3 was kind of a let down.
Doom 3 was OK. At the time, it was the only game I had worth playing and I still never finished it. Cba now though.
Doom 3 was rather unimaginative and cheap on the scare tactics.
To really move this game forward, they need to keep the action intense, but find a way to incorporate the more subtle, psychological horrors of games like Silent HIll. Not just things jumping out of shadows and those stupid monster closets....
Doom 3 is a lot like eggnog.
You try it the first time and it's freekin' amazing.... then you try it some more and it starts getting worse to the point where you hate it.
After a while you can come back it it and it's totally awesome again, but it gets old.
The thing I liked about Doom 3 is that it was, for the most part, and old school point-and-click, kill everything that moves kinda shooter. Add total darkness, a devilish and evil theme, and a clausterphobic environment and you have yourself a recipe for slow-cooked awesomeness! For $60 it was a rip-off, but as a bargain bin download it was great. Multiplayer isn't even worth talking about.... but co-op mods really made the game great!
The only problem is that the game isn't that scary due to predictability. The scariest thing about the game (beyond spiders, which I hate) is the "shock" factor from the "demon closets". Like a bat (or in this case freakish monster) out of hell would just wait in a closet for me to step on a certain spot of the floor.
Anyways, I'm psyched about this!
If it plays like Doom and Doom2 then great, otherwise avoid.
This could be good. I hope they've learned from their mistakes in Doom 3. I feel like a golden age of gaming is coming. Mirror's Edge, Doom 4, Fallout 3, Portal 2
The original Doom's were FAR scarier than the third installment. On one hand you had 'closet' monsters, on the other you arse-clenching battles with a Cyberdemon volleying rockets at you. The closest we ever got to a 'next-gen' Doom game was Serious Sam. Now, take all the campiness from that game away, chuck in the occult, demons, extreme gore and id tech 5 and you've got the ideal Doom IV.
Anyone think that Doom for the PS1 was miles better than the PC version? The only reason I think that is because of the music and sound effects.
DOOM 3 had too much darkness, too many monster closets and cheap scare tactics, too few game elements that make modern games fun, and too many game elements that we're all sick of. If they evolve the play style to the 21st century, then it will rule. I mean, I never beat DOOM 3 because it got too repetitive and boring, while the only reason I didn't beat Quake 4 was because it had a monster glitch that made loading a game impossible. Quake 4 at least had some new and fun ideas whereas DOOM 3 only had flat, overly linear gameplay that wasn't fun for very long.
Also, I object to that eggnog simile; I love eggnog, and I have never had enough to make me stop loving it (drank a damn gallon last Christmas).
