Sony says it has a better lineup of games for 2008

Category: Industry, Posted: 05/07/2008 at 04:04PM CDT by Frank Ling, Editorial Director

ps3 controllerSony is feeling pretty confident about the future of its PS3 game lineup for 2008. So much so that SCEE chief, David Reeves, said that he thought Sony's lineup was better than Microsoft's. No surprise here.

But Reeves really may have some facts to back up his sanguine outlook. With the arrival of expected blockbuster hits coming down the pike such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet, it looks like a pretty solid lineup indeed.

Reeves was asked if he thought the Xbox 360 was in trouble but was diplomatic in saying that Microsoft has really helped the game industry.

"No I don't think it's a sinking ship. I think they have contributed amazingly to the growth of the industry. And I think we have done exactly the same. We don't criticize the competition because we are all in this industry and the only way you can do it is to actually bring more consumers in.

"So I'm not going to criticize them. All I'm saying is that I think that when we look ahead I think we honestly have a better line-up on PS3 than they probably do on Xbox. They've had two or three Christmases now, I can't remember how many, you know, but I think we've got a really good one coming up. Not just Christmas but in the summer as well."

Regardless of whether Sony's lineup is better than the Xbox 360's or not, the PS3 has certainly come a long way from being the pariah of the game industry to being a game console that is churning out sales numbers that are making Sony brass grin from ear to ear.

3 games makes a solid lineup? is there anything else...?

Sony (and Microsoft. and Nintendo) Can say anything. The proof will be in the lineup when it comes.

But, indeed, those three titles alone make for a very strong showing indeed. E3 will reveal who is really king of the lineup in 2008/09 (open to personal taste and expectations, of course)

Think about it.

They have Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, MGS4, Tekken 6, Killzone 2, GT5 and heaps more.

Since you rehashed three games already named, and named only three additional titles, I'm curious about the "heaps more" you cite.

Not disagreeing, genuinely curious.

MGS4, HAZE, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Socom, GT5P, HOME, Maybe FFXIII, Infamous. some others too. Along with multi platform games like Fallout 3 & Dead Space.

09 is just as strong with God of War 3, Killzone 2 (Blows Every games graphics away), FFXIII & VERSUS, GT5, Another Ratchet & Clank, And unannounced others.

Home was meant to be out on release.

MGS4 will shift some PS3s, probably bought by the same people who will buy FFXIII and LBP. I doubt R2 will shift hardware, same with socom. Multiplatform games won't shift the hardware, especially if the player already another of the platforms for the games release.

The library is getting bigger but as far as the much needed killer exclusives go, Sony needs more. To sell the games they need to sell the hardware.

I must have those 3 games. But there is also Ninja Gaiden 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction for the 360. And kinda Gears of War 2, though I think I'll have a "been there, played that" feeling because of the other 5 games. It shall be good regardless. It is my poor nintendo wii that collects dust and will for a while thanks to those AAA titles. (Plus after mario cart, their lineup puts me to sleep.)

This will be a much bigger year for PS3, but 360 has already had multiple hits for several consecutive years, plus a solid 3rd party line-up. I don't think one good year for Sony is going to blow the 360 out of the water, or convince dedicated 360 fans to jump ship and sell their souls to Sony.
