Daily Q: Can Wii survive past this year without another big Nintendo exclusive?

Category: Features, Posted: 05/08/2008 at 12:11PM CDT by Brendon Lindsey, Editor-in-Chief

dqThere's no question that the Wii is a bigger success than anyone imagined it would be--but is its time up? With most of the normal Nintendo giants out of the way--and still little to no third party support for the little white system--can it possibly last much longer?

I've believed the Wii would steadily decline after Mario Kart and Boom Blox since last year, and that's still my stance today.

After this week, and the release of Boom Blox there isn't too many big games left for Nintendo. Well, Wii Fit for one, but I don't think that will succeed as well here as it did in Japan. That leaves Animal Crossing and Star Fox as the last two popular franchises with today's gamers, but neither has performed well with recent console titles.

So are the Wii's days numbered? Or will we see some non-Nintendo games (or other Zelda/Mario games) out next year to keep Nintendo afloat in the console market?

I work at GameStop, and I would have to disagree about Wii Fit not being a big title. It's generating a lot of buzz among customers as far as I've seen, and I try to recommend it to people who don't know what to get after picking up Mario Kart. I'm not much of a Wii Fan myself, but Fit looks like fun and I think it will help to keep Nintendo afloat at least until Guitar Hero Aerosmith comes out.

Will the Wii need to keep coming up with extraneous peripherals to keep having the "next big thing?"

By the end of the day, no matter what game I've played, all I've done is wave a stick in the air. Or wave around a stick stuck to a circle... or a stick stuck to another stick....
Not that punching buttons is any more fulfilling...

Guess that E3 will show what they got up their sleeves...

They need to hurry up with Pikmen 3. Seriously, that game was made for the Wii.

Pikmin, f-Zero, maybe another new Zelda game. The system needs proper 3rd party support... It doesn't need Mini game bonanza's shoved at it... Wii ware might be it's only chance... And it that's true we need more memory...

No. Well, actually, it probably will, cause it has a huge casual gamer fanbase. But with the hardcore folks, no. Smash is the only reason I play it...

Wii doesn't need exclusives to survive because its primary user base is comprised of casual gamers who buy games not because they are exclusives but because they are fun to play. Lots of games that aren't considered fun for hardcore gamers do quite well with the casual crowd. Wii is going to be around here for a long time because Iwata himself says that they have to continue to innovate to keep the Wii crowd happy.

Wii Fit is an example of this.

Yes, but I'm sure any real gamers are getting pretty damn sick of all the shovelware.

The Wii can survive...but can the "hardcore" Wii owners?

Are there "hardcore" Wii owners Eddie? I think most of "teh hardc0rez" own a PS3/360 and a Wii.. if they own a Wii at all.

However, as we learned, the Hardcore doesn't make or break a system. The DS taught us that. Someone called the Wii a "minigame bonanza." But you know what, those games sell. And third party support is there in that form and they're making money like crazy so third party support will continue to be there. It may not be what the readers of THIS site want, but it is there.

And for the first time in a long time companies other than Nintendo are moving product. They'll continue to be there as long as they make money. I can only hope they branch out from carnival games to more story based games.
