AMD announced that it has developed "Open GL ES 2.0 mobile graphics technology compliance," according to Engadget. What this means to us common folks is that a graphics chip has the ability to produce images as good as the Xbox 360 on handhelds or mobile phones.
So this brings about the topic that has been whispered in the back rooms of the dark, smoke-filled rooms of game arcade establishments--will we ever see a handheld Xbox 360 game console?
There is no answer to this question at the moment but the thoughts of an Xbox handheld sends chills through the spines of handheld enthusiasts. The technology seems to be in place--now all we have to do is wait. The Q Opinion on Activision/IW?

I been predicitng this forever, i see it happening.
but open gl, is different from teh direct x! Well, you'll get pretty similar graphics, but not exactly the same, for better or for worse.
Would be cool I suppose. But at least make it so people can make their own games/software for it without the need for custom firmware and suchlike.
It's about damn time! Have you any idea how long I've been waiting for this kind of news? Forever and a day, that's how long!
I thought Open GL was a fairly dead api.
Or, is that just what MS wants me to believe?
Well that's not a 100% accurate statement. They're talking about hand held resolutions. Resolutions like:
iPod 320 by 480
PSP 480 x 272
DS 256 x 192 (each screen).
So they're making stuff look good at those resolutions. Now if they could make that little chip have stuff looking good at 1920x1080i (XBox 360/PS3 resolutions)then we are talking about some real muscle. With today's graphic chip power scaling it down in processing power and power consumption to work for hand helds isn't exactly revolutionary.
What about PDA's resolution (800x480)
I would love to have good OpenGL support on a WinMobile device, also some new phones will have projectors in them so it needs better chips for dual-screen support.
@rtanger, OpenGL is not dead, and it was there before direct3D... microsoft created its own interface to make money..
Aurien, while I understand your point in the matter I just have to ask, when is the last time if ever you've seen xbox 360 graphics on a handheld. The closest I've come yet is God of War on the PSP and that is PS2 graphics. My opinion is that this is the next logical step, but this soon is "surprising".
opengl and direct3d are both just ways of accessing your graphics card. and there are lots of advantages to opengl, e.g, access to the latest shader model (cant remember what number) without having to pay for vista/dx10 (i.e, you can get dx10 quality graphics via opengl, without buying vista)
although of course it isn't actually direct x, just a competing standard.
also note that lots of games can use either method and look exactly the same: anything by id, unreal tournament etc. also remember that consoles such as anything that isnt the xbox can't use directx: they all use opengl.
Well, good to hear. However, that means that the new X BOX 720 should be about to arrive, along with the PS4, which should both be so powerful, that simply setting them in front of any home appliance *while still in the box* should be sufficient to fry every wire and circuit within them.:p
...along with charging a base rate for each at $5,000 dollars, with the note that it's soo affordable, when you really think about how much joy you'll be getting from these systems!
Xbox Live on a handheld console would be pure awesomeness
I'm not surprised that handheld graphics are now going to be on the x360 level, I mean, you can sort of hold a laptop in your hand, so it's not all news...
