In an ironic turn of events, Sony has announced that it is shaving $100 off of its 80GB PS3, making Sony's game console cheaper than Microsoft's top of the line Elite Xbox 360, which clocks in at a hefty $449 while the 80GB PS3 comes in at a relatively light $399.
Sony also plans to cut the 40GB PS3 from production, which will help clear the air of the numerous iterations of the PS3, which has evolved in various flavors of 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, and now finally, the 80GB model.
The drop in price squarely contradicts Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's CFO, when he stated only days before that Sony's "plan is not to reduce the price." Either he was left out of the loop or he was trying to deflect the speculations that many have held about another price break with the PS3.
Regardless, the PS3 is cheaper now. The big question is whether this additional price cut will entice the PS2 crowd and other fence sitters to finally jump over to the PS3. But one question remains for many who are considering the jump; where are the games?
Its about time I got a next-gen console. Do PS2 games work on PS3s?
^ No
I thought the 80GB model supports emulation of PS2 environment to allow PS2 discs to play.
You would be right enben.
Also I might get a ps3 now, although I feel bad for my friend that just bought one last week.
The 80GB PS3 has it, but it's pretty limited according to what reports are saying.
The new 80GB PS3 has "all the features of the 40GB model" according to Jack Tretton during the keynote. This is not a price cut on the 80GB model, it's a new SKU with all the specs of the 40GB but with a larger hard drive. It does not come with a bundled game like the 80GB did, and currently will have no backwards compatibility with PS2 games just like the 40GB model it is replacing. The current 80GB model is also being phased out as far as I understand, so there will be no SKU with backwards compatibility any longer.
