Brandon Jacobs of the Giants trucks through just as Madden has this month

The NPD Group has released their sales figures for both software and hardware for the month of August, with no surprise as to what software title topped the chart. Madden NFL 10 dominated the list of top ten software titles sold, with Batman: Arkham Asylum taking a good chunk of the chart itself.

August console software sales:

1. Madden NFL 10 (Xbox 360, EA Sports) - 928,000 units
2. Wii Sports Resort (Wii, Nintendo) - 754,000 units
3. Madden NFL 10 (PS3, EA Sports) - 665,000 units
4. Batman: Arkham Asylum (Xbox 360, Rocksteady) - 303,000 units
5. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3, Rocksteady) - 290,000 units
6. Madden NFL 10 (PS2, EA Sports) - 160,000 units
7. Dissidia: Final Fantasy (PSP, Square Enix) - 130,000 units
8. Wii Fit (Wii, Nintendo) - 128,000 units
9. Mario Kart (Wii, Nintendo) - 120,000 units
10. Fossil Fighters (NDS, Red Entertainment) - 92,000 units

Hardware sales showed a renewed growth in the PS3, as sales increased from July's 121,800 units thanks to the price drop of the console to $299. The Xbox 360 also saw a boost in sales thanks to its price drop as well for the Elite model to $299. The two competing consoles showed nearly identical numbers.

August Hardware sales:

1. Nintendo DS - 552,900 units
2. Nintendo Wii - 277,400 units
3. Xbox 360 - 215,400 units
4. PlayStation 3 - 210,000 units
5. PSP - 140,300 units
6. PlayStation 2 - 105,900 units

Looking at those sales figures makes me happy to know that Batman is actually a good game, because it'd sell the same even if it wasn't.

Why!?! Why must it always be Madden? Aren't people getting tired of buying the same game every year? How it continues to sell baffles me.
