PS3 Netflix will be disc-free by October

Streaming Netflix videos is one of my favorite perks on consoles these days. However, as an owner of both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, I often find myself choosing the latter for my Netflix needs. Don’t get me wrong, the PS3 version works just fine, but having to insert a cumbersome disc every time I want to boot up some videos is downright annoying. Luckily, I, and many other frustrated PS3 users won’t have to wait long for a seamless Netflix experience.

In their latest earning’s call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings revealed that a disc-less version of the video service would be coming to PS3 by this fall. "Before our next call in October, we expect to be launching a major new version of our Sony PS3 user interface which doesn’t require a disc and is dynamically updated continuously with the latest Netflix UI improvements."

Hulu Plus, recently announced for the forthcoming PlayStation Plus serice, was also on Hastings’ mind. He reassured listeners that Netflix will learn from it’s competitors achievements. "Once Hulu Plus has a few hundred thousand subscribers we’ll be able to learn from consumers what they like about Hulu Plus. Then we’ll work to incorporate what we find back into Netflix."

He added, "The Hulu team is sharp, and we’re not going to underestimate them."

Them sound like fightin’ words to me.
