Star Wars Galaxies donates $10,000 to charity

habitatIn a move that’ll surely melt our hearts today, Sony Online Entertainment’s (SOE) Austin studio announced they’ve risen over $10,000 for a local Texas Habitat for Humanity charity.

Houses were built and destroyed, but not in reality, in fact, all the fundraising took place in Sony’s MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies.

SOE transformed the normal funding to digital funding by having players "…demolish abandoned or unoccupied player-created houses and buildings. SOE Austin also generated an in-game event where fighters from the evil Galactic Empire swooped down from the stars and bombed the buildings."

John Blakely, SOE Austin’s vice president of development, handed the oversized and hefty check to Habitat for Humanity during a reception of 150 people.

In a case like this, it’s great to see game developers help out their local community and charities. Even though games are important, the gamers themselves are the most important. I wondered if anyone appeared in full Star Wars costume during the reception.
