Your ‘Greatest Game of All Time’
While I am highly reluctant to bestow such an honor on any one game, and no matter how carefully I consider greats like Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil 4, Tetris, and others (like Braid, duh), I can’t oust the crowning achievement that is Ocarina of Time from that #1 spot on my all-time list.
This game’s legacy seems everlasting, and it has become the almost de facto answer to today’s final question. It’s hard to imagine another game being the "best of all time," because everyone knows that that title belongs to Ocarina of Time, right?
The hype, love, and devotion surrounding this title are well deserved, though; when the game was released back in 1998, some of the design elements and play mechanics it presented to gamers were unheard of and mind-blowing. The way Link interacted with his environment, the context sensitivity of every action the player could perform, the immensity of the living world of Hyrule, the bosses, the dungeons, the characters, the quests, the weapons, the items, and the way the game’s story fleshed out the Zelda legend so comprehensively were all reasons to fall in love with Miyamoto’s masterpiece.
It’s possible to argue that some other game is the best of all time, but is it really possible to argue against Ocarina? I don’t think I could.
